I have to turn connection this way and that to make it charge. One of my adaptors worked for a while on another laptop but won't work at all now.

you need to fix or replace the DC & Sound Card. Pushing and bending on that socket causes failure over time, the magsafe is a much better idea. Identify the exact model to find the part.
Same thing happens to the ends of the plug end on the charger-you seemed to have ruled that out.
