battery does not hold charge & damaged the 'hold' function

Is this a typical problem. The original battery appeared to be glued to the hold cable. In order to remove the old battery and replace it with a new one I must have damaged the ability for the ipod to successfully switch from hold on to hold off.

In addition I am unsure if the new battery is able to hold/store a charge? Is this a typical problem following battery replacement?
