N3 Black screen >1 cause requires genius!

Can you help me with repair info re N3?

Rain exposure resulted in black screen, otherwise phone seems to be working fine: powers on, blue/ green lights on screen work, Samsung sound on boot up, receives calls, can hear text msg alerts, can activate speaker phone (by blind touch), etc.

I disassembled and cleaned mother board and connectors with isopropyl alcohol, screen still black. So I'm thinking of replacing it with:

Before I order I'd like to know whether there is any way of determining that it's definitely the screen that needs replacing and not some other problem? Don't want to buy a new screen if that's not the problem.

Also product description says "Notice: Please test the functionality of this item before installation." How does one do this?

Try and replace the mother board

por

Thx Cody, but motherboard seems fine as other phone functions are working, eg call answering, recharging, msg alerts.

por

Did you notice when you looked at the mother board did it have any ribbons torn. Have you ever dropped it What is the history on the phone?

por

No torn ribbons that I could see. The phone's been dropped a few times over the years but not recently. I bought it new and it functioned well up until it got wet while I was walking in the rain a couple of weeks ago. I've ordered a new lcd and will post the results of install when I receive it. Thanks for your help.

Solução escolhida

Yes all the time most of the functions can be ok and the screen black but still to be a mother board problem, but as long as you can blind touch on your screen seems the mother board to be fine and the lcd parts to be faulty. As Cody said the 100% sure is to test with another mother board, but i am very sure is the lcd in your case. "Please test the functionality of this item.........." means you need to try and plug the lcd on the logic board and see if the lcd is working properly without taking any plastic film away from the lcd or breaking any seal. If the lcd is not working you can send it back, but if the lcd is not working and you took plastic films out you can't send it back.

Thanks Alex, that's very helpful. I'll look for a tutorial (hopefully video) that describes in detail how to do the test. Worst case is new screen remains black, in which case I'll take the lot to phone repair professional and console myself with the knowledge that I've gained by having a go at fixing it myself. Actually, it's been quite satisfying. Cheers, Mark

Your welcome. When you will receive the lcd you can send me a message and we can try fix it from there. I will be happy to assist you.

por

Thx Alex, that's a very kind and generous offer.

The screen arrived Friday night and I plan to try to test/install it this afternoon or tomorrow. What is your availability?

I know there are some tear down videos, which I thought I would watch before attempting the repair myself. At the moment I'm most uncertain about how to test to ensure the replacement screen is not defective.

Regards,

Mark

Ps I'm in Bulli, NSW, Australia

There is a hour difference. I am in florida, usa. You can try and follow the teardown guide from ifixit. Is very good. After you take the logic board out try to put it in the new screen frame and just plug the cables, try to put the battery and se if it starts and if everything is ok. The new lcd has the mid frame installed? Or is just the lcd and you need to install it on the old frame?

Hi Alex,

The new lcd has the mid frame installed. I put the new screen frame in, plugged the cables and installed battery, but no joy, it didn't start. Not sure if the new screen is defective tho because I replaced mother board on old screen and it wouldn't start either, and it worked fine before I pulled it apart. I wonder whether I've done something wrong: damaged a part on tear down or rebuild or connected incorrectly. Do you think you can help me or should I take the lot to professional to assess and fix?

Regards, Mark

Can you send me some pictures? I will try and help you. Make sure the battery is charged.

Hi Alex, I took it to the mobile repair shop. The tech said new screen works fine but he can't get it to boot off the battery only off mains power. The battery charges to full and they even tried another new battery but still phone would boot. They said they can't figure out what's wrong with it and if they were me they'd bin it and buy a new one. Any thoughts?

Sorry for my late answer. I am very sorry to hear that. This sounds like a fault on the mother board and something is happening with the mother board. Is very hard to give you an answer on that without seeing the mother board and diag it. Did you buy a new phone or did you tried with another service?

I've bought a cheap new phone (Alcatel Pixi 3 4.5, Au$69) while I wait for note 6 to come out later in the year. I still haven't given up on assembling a n3 from the new mid screen I purchased and a second hand n3 with broken screen that I could buy cheap on eBay. Though I should probably cut my losses.

hi, last night I developed similar problem with my SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 3 SM-N9005. All functions are working fine except that the screen display is dark. However, drop down menu works fine and even the double tapping main menu button at the bottom of the screen brings up the "talk microphone" display.

I developed this problem last night once I plugged my phone charger into an already powered-on electrical outlet. This caused, first, a sudden restoring of my display to factory mode settings and then the screen went dark after a little while. No amount of attempts to recover it using SAMSUNG SMART SWITCH helped. And the SAMSUNG SIDE SYNC software is unable to connect so I could get the display on computer screen.

Any help please?

Just same happened to me this morning ... firstly it takes like few minutes to boot , then I just see the upper slide bar where the clock and other notifications are ... it opens the whole search screen so it obviously is not up to the faulty lcd or screen or whatever ... I'm waiting for some solution if existing so that I don't have to do the factory reset and loose all my data and contacts etc ... any solution so far ???

@iralozana2013

Greetings, this is a software problem. You need to get your cellphone software reinstalled. Your cellphone will be flushed before reinstalling fresh software resulting in loss of complete stored data on your phone. However, incase you have a backup of your data stored on your computer, then you can reinstall your data again. This is what I successfully did.

Kind regards
