How to ground aluminum boat trailer

Find the ground wire where it comes from the trailer wiring plug, connect it to the chassis of the trailer by drilling a suitably sized hole and then secure it using a nut and bolt or self tapping screw (suggest that you find aluminium nut & bolt/screw to prevent corrosion problems between steel and aluminium, also rust), then connect the trailer lights wiring ground to the chassis as well, in a similar manner, or run it back to the same nut, bolt/screw that you just made. Scrape back your paint job a bit so that wiring makes good direct contact with the chassis then repaint over the bolt,nut/ screw heads etc.

If you find the correct ground wire and it still doesn't work, check the wiring in the vehicle trailer socket. Make sure that the ground wire is connected properly or even run in. It has been known to omit this wire (to save a few cents no doubt) to the socket and rely on a ground connection being made by the contact of the towball with the trailer coupling when hitched up. Not a good idea, especially if you keep the towball lubricated with grease or some other lubricant to minimize wear and tear on the ball. If it is missing, just run a wire from the chassis of your vehicle to the appropriate connection in the trailer socket. Be sure to securely re-tape the wiring harness to the socket so as to minimize future problems caused by getting wet etc.
