Partial Resurrection from Error 53

15 months ago I dunked my iPhone briefly in clean water. After drying out (no special technique except time), the phone woke up. Thinking back I'm pretty sure I was having home button issues since the phone would exit open apps to the home screen. I tried to update to whichever new iOS version there was at that time and of course got Error 53. Talked with Apple Store: of course no repair available because of water damage. Long story short, every few months I would try to restore the phone (still recognized in iTunes) with eventual Error 53. Tried again yesterday, and after 2 tries it restored the phone, firmware and installed iOS 9.2.1. Everything worked fine for ~2 hours, then the home button stopped working intermittently, then pretty much totally. All the rest worked: screen, touch, power & volume buttons, charging, Wifi. Didn't ever attempt to use Touch ID. Switched to AssistiveTouch for soft home screen. Works fine until either it times out to lock screen or I turn it off, then the screen powers on every 10 seconds or so. My question is will the phone work if I just disconnect the home button? I don't need it as a phone any longer; just want to use it at home for web/remote control use.

@abqmd you are not telling us if you have done anything since it was water damaged. I would at least suggest a proper cleaning and a new battery. Time is not a special technique. It's an invitation to terminal failure.

If you sent it to be repaired with an ultrasonic cleaner 15 months ago, your phone would be fine now. Leaving it to corrode is what developed the error 53 issue since your home button or extension cable was damaged.

The phone will work without a home button, but you won't be able to ever restore it once you loose it.

Thanks to both of you for your comments. Other than trying the rice treatment (which I now know is not ideal), I didn't try anything except take it to Apple Store who said there was one of the internal sensors showed water damage. At least all the parts are still original. I think there must be an intermittent connection for the home button/flex cable that lasted long enough for the phone to fully restore from Error 53, and even for the home button to work for several hours afterwards. Is it still a good idea to get it to a repair shop to get it inspected, ultrasonically cleaned even now 15 months later? Ideally I'd like a functioning home button, but don't really need Touch ID to be working.

And if I get it ultrasonically cleaned, should I also replace the home button's long flex cable? Thanks for your advice.

About how long was it submerged? It was submerged right?

Ultrasonic cleaning "could" still work, but the chances of fully working get less and less. If it was clean water, hopefully the chlorine and mineral values were low.

I would personally send it for ultrasonic cleaning(Not some cheap a$$ on eBay using a toothbrush).

Thanks again for your comment, Jake. It was submerged just for a few seconds in clean water. Are there particular parts/components that should be ultrasonically cleaned, or all parts?

Well, I would make sure there is no corrosion on the home button area and cable. The water might not have gotten to the motherboard. Personally I would clean the cables, home button, motherboard and replace most of the components like the battery. Of course if it was only a few seconds, the water might have only gotten to the earspeaker, home button, bottom jacks and speaker port. The mics should be fine after the moisture is gone. Water usually doesn't get through the buttons either.

Overall it will take close inspection to get the device back on the road to recovery.
