Samsung SSD 840 Series Help for iMac

Hello All, as you can see I have an imac mid 2007 2134 24" and I purchased a 840 series Samsung SSD. I guess my main question is what do I do first before anything? Do I install the ssd 1st? Or do I migrate all my files 1st? The cable it came with, I believe it's called the SAta cable, when I connect the ssd via USB it says it's not recognized and that there's nothing persay connected. After doin my own research there were plenty of options but none seemed to work for me. Installing the SSD I don't think will be a problem, but making sure the firmware is up to date and whatever else I need to do 1st before installing it. I just want to confirm what my 1st step should be and how to go about doin it.

The magician software obviously is for Windows and not mac, and I was able to download the magician software for Mac bur it still says "No Ssd found" Help!!!!

Thanks

It sounds like you had the right idea here. Connect the SSD via the SATA to USB adapter cable to your system. Then, run Disk Utility from your system to setup the SSD. You'll need to create a GUID partition map and a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition.

If you can't see the SSD within Disk Utility then you'll have to find a friend who has a Mac to double check the SSD and cable. Your system has the older 2.0 USB ports and may have problems with the adapter and/or the USB ports in your system can't offer the needed power for the SSD. You may need to get a 2.5" FireWire HD case to hold your SSD instead.

You don't need the Samsung Magic utility to setup your SSD. the default settings should be fine.

Once you get the SSD formatted and able to be connected to your system you'll need to install the OS onto it using the OS installer app you downloaded from the Apple Apps store (create a brand new user account). During the install process it will ask you if you want to migrate any files from your old system, answer yes and point it to your internal HD. It will then copy over the user accounts, apps & data over to your new drive.

But before you run the OS installer make sure you trim down your files so everything fits onto your SSD. You may want to use a file cleaner to clean out the old cache & log files. As well as booting up your system on an external bootable drive to run Disk Utility to fix any drive & permission errors on it first. Also remember her you'll need to save 1/2 on a smaller SSD and 1/3 on a larger SSD for swap space.
