Swapping hard drives in a iMac

Can I take my good hard drive from my iMac 2211 and replace a bad hard drive in a A1311?

No. Apple used a proprietary heat sensor on the newer machines and your fans will run unabated if your just swap drives. Go here and select your exact model , you may need an adapter: http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Models.c...

Not to rebut you, but this model actually used an external sensor that was adhered to the Hard Drives, an adapter isn't needed. As long as they choose a SATA II drive they shouldn't have any issues :)

Shmajay, before you rebut me, READ the question! See what machine the drive is going into!

Mayer is correct here! You need to use a different external thermal sensor for the newer systems. But, you may want to just get a new faster drive that using your older drive. If you need to get to the data on it and the system still works try setting up your older system in Target Mode connecting the two systems via a FireWire cable or use an external drive case if your old system I dead.
