What should I do with my old 27 inch iMac

I have an IMac that the logic board has gone out of so I purchased a new 21inch IMac, I'm wondering if it would be possible to take the optical drive out of the old one and put it in an enclosure and use it as a "superdrive" If so would you have any suggestions on cases? Also wondering about good cases for the hard drive as well since while i'm in there I'll just take that out as well.

Would you mind telling us why you think the logic board is bad? Did you check for the Apple GPU extension repair program for the 2011 model? If not please give the last four figures of your serial number located on the bottom of the stand.

I did and it is not included, I tested the entire unit on several occasions and I have basically replaced everything that could cause it to be faulty. The only part I haven't replaced is the logic board and I am still not able to boot up.

What are the diagnostic lights showing when you attempt start up?

1, 2, and 3 I believe.

Solução escolhida

A. Fix it:

B. Plug it in to an external monitor just to make sure it is generating a video signal. Check the logic board to display cable connections.

C. Sell it to a Mac repair shop after telling them the diagnostic light condition if you don't want tp mess with it.

LED 1 - Indicates that the trickle voltage from the power supply is detected by the main logic board. This LED will remain ON while the iMac is connected to the AC power. The LED will remain on even when the computer has been shut down or put to sleep. The LED will turn off only if the AC power is disconnected or the power supply is faulty.

LED 2 - Indicates that the main logic board has detected proper power from the power supply when the computer is turned on. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and the power supply is working correctly.

LED 3 - Indicates that the computer and the video card are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is communicating properly with the video card. If LEDs 1 and 2 are ON and you heard the startup sound, but LED 3 is OFF, then the video card might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

LED 4 - Indicates that the computer and the LCD display panel are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated. If the LED is ON and there is no image on the LCD display panel, the LCD display panel or inverter might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

And do tell good sir how would you suggest I repair this item when everything is working correctly, I replaced the HDD and amazingly it worked for 2 days then went out again. Now it won't boot up, who can explain what is wrong there.

I saw this once before, we diagnosed it as a bad power supply on the 12v rail. Replacing that might help

It might be time for fresh eyes. See what a professional would charge for diagnostics.
