When my screen dims or the back light is low the screen flickers. Turning the brightness up stops this from happening.

I have been working through this problem over the last month or so. I've had three factory resets both self executed (following similar steps as discussed in this post), as well as by the AT&T rep.

I have finally given up, and sent in for an exchange.

The phone is basically unusable in low brightness settings, and makes my room light up like a techno discoteque @ night if day dream is enabled, power saving is enabled and battery less than 20%, auto adjust brightness set (and its dark), or brightness set to low.

Resetting the phone may initially seem to resolve the issue (few hours or so) but after downloading security updates and running the phone over any bit of time, maybe even before restoring any apps, the problem comes back.

I'll post an update once I receive my replacement for anyone who is interested. This will validate, without a doubt, if there is a software conflict or its 100% hardware issue.

por

im having this problem now.

por

so am i. it's seriously so annoying

por

I just started having the very same problem............that is very discouraging to hear you were unable to resolve and eventually resorted to send in for an exchange :-(

por

Since the new update/upgrade on my android (august 2016) it has done the same too. Also when my phone switches it self off weather iv stopped using it or its on sleep mode while im talking to someone the screen will not turn itself back on. Dissapointing as this phone was bought in january of this year.

Finally got this fixed. it sounds like the reason for this is that since the latest update your phone cannot decide whether to use hardware or software back light settings. I managed to make the problem go away by doing this:

Go to settings >> system >> About device.

Find "Build number" and click 6 times fast on it.

You will then get the message saying: "You are now a developer"

Come back to Home Screen, and then go back to Settings >> system >> Now you will see the "Developer Options"

Now go to Developer options >> Drawing Section or Rendering Section >> Find "Turn off hardware overlays" or "disable hardware overlays" >> This will force the phone to always use GPU for screen adjustments. no more flickering.

Thank you so much! This is the only thing that has helped and I've tried everything! No more flickering!

por

I've just tried this. If I turn the brightness ALL the way down, it still flickers like crazy, however, if that's the only time it'll do it, I consider that a win. I'm not gonna put my sim card back in til I give it a few days though lol. I have to pull the battery to get the sim in, and it's been touch and go as to whether I could turn the dang thing on again. Fingers crossed!

Edit: Well, that didn't last long. I held my breath and hit the power button to turn the screen off. Flicker flicker. It came back on, but I can say that at least in my case, the flicker hasn't been stopped by turning off the overlay.

por

In my samsung galaxy j7 i dont find any option like turn off hardware overlays or disable hardware overlays

It worked! You are a genius! Thanks.

In my research thus far, the AMOLED screen technology is to blame. When the display circuits get old or damaged, they don't sustain current at low power settings. In LED screens, a back light controls brightness, but AMOLED screens send current to each pixel for brightness control. If the circuit is damaged, or any corrosion has built up inside, this could attenuate the current below the point required to sustain light flow. I see this problem with some LED and CFL lights on motion sensor switches. Just enough current goes through the motion sensor to keep it's circuits active, and that current causes a flicker in the light.

With the screen though, since the problem is only resolved when you increase the brightness just a bit above minimum, it seems anything that lowers the display power (auto brightness for example) will cause it to flicker if this setting gets too low. I also noticed that before the screen locks on timer, it dims to low power for a few seconds and flickers as a result. There are apps that attempt to resolve this by putting a translucent black screen over your desktop and apps. This keeps the power up on the pixels but adds a black overlay, kind of like a screen filter. You can adjust the darkness if you need it to save your eyes when reading in the dark but it doesn't help save power any. They also require a rooted device, which could void warranties. The reason for this I believe is because apps are supposed to operate in a way they don't intrude on each other, and a filter that lays over your screen does in fact alter the output of your display rendering. With the added security concerns of these apps possibly collecting screen shots and sending them to another site, I would avoid this. Best to use a physical screen overlay you can put on or remove as needed as long as it doesn't interfere with your touch screen options.

Ultimately, these devices were meant for replacement every 2 to 3 years so if you're like me and you like to make your investment last, best thing to do is apply any work around you can come up with. A repair shop may be able to wipe the circuit boards down with a solution that clears away corrosion, but it won't repair any weakened pixels. I'm still using a Samsung S4 and only now that I have verified it won't upgrade to the Android 6.0 OS am I considering replacing it within the next year or so.

thats because of the new update of the android version as i had recently updated my samsung galaxy s5 to marshmallow this started all because i think the phone is not able to undestand the display settings whether to choose the cpu or gpu to display the screen its just we have to wait for a next update or just just jump back to an older android version and the people who say that to purchase a new phone than its useless using samsung mobiles where for a silly bug we have to upgrade for a whole new mobile phone simply useless this will take down the samsung market that means

samsung must have done this purposely so that the customers could upgrade their phones.... lol sorry samsung if its your startegy to do this kind of $@$* then sorry done with samsung...!!!

por

That's really ignorant to think Samsung would purposely build in a bug to force you to buy a phone every couple years. They may make manufacturing changes that impact the longevity of their products to cut costs, but intentional bugs are absurd. You obviously don't build or produce anything or else you know that's business suicide.

por

In the marketing world of mobile phones its not Absurd to think they wouldnt try to purposely out bugs in a system to get peopkw to purchase an uograde. You must not kniw anything about marketing and how some people like you are ignorant enough not to kbiw this goes on..lol They try and if someone calls to repair the issue the ALWAYS try to get you to do an uograde to a new device ..otherwise they do the "factory reset bullshit to fix it....period!

I confirm that low temperture is the cause and I can explain why after the factory reset, the problem goes away for a while.

Simply, after doing a factory reset / master reset, the phone gets very warm, that's a normal thing specially when the phone is reinstalling the system apps.

As you can see, when you get your phone warm enough, your problem will vanish / will be reduced untill it gets cold again. When the phone is so cold, the problem gets worse.

I tested this many times and it's 100% true.

Now I think people who understand the hardware stuff will tell you that the connector is loose.

Finally, we are waiting for a fix and untill that, keep your phone warm as possible as you can.

For those who use dimmer/ filter apps to workaround the problem, remember that one day you won't be able to use your phone, the screen will finally gets black a lot ( will be painful to turn it on after many many tries )

Just consider buying a new phone in the short term ( if you don't take care of your devices and you make them fall on the ground and stuff like this, just don't buy an AMOLED screen phone, look for something else, go away from SAMSUNG )

To conclude, AMOLED screens don't like to fall on the ground ( the 1st cause of screen flickering ) take care of your phone before you lose it.

por

And why AMOLED would be more sensible to falls ? any good technical explanation instead of just saying to not to buy AMOLOD for that particular reason out of nowhere.

GALAXY S5 SCREEN FLICKERS WHEN BRIGHTNESS IS SET AT CERTAIN LEVEL

Problem: When the screen brightness is lowered to the lowest setting, the lower half of the screen begins to flicker. Raising the brightness a few notches stops the flickering. I have not dropped the phone or exposed it to water – the issue started out of the blue and it’s driving me mad! Please help.

Troubleshooting: Screen flickering issue can be hardware or firmware problem and since there’s not much information here, you have to other option but to rule out the possibility that it’s just a firmware issue (which I really think it is) by performing hard reset. Of course, backup all your important data before doing that as they will be deleted.

Turn off the device.

Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.

When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.

When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.

Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’

Press Power button to select.

Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.

Press Power button to select and start the master reset.

When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.

Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the hard reset failed, then have a technician check the problem for you.

I had the same issue with my Samsung S5 phone, and it turned out that the Micro SD card was the problem. I too had given up, and started looking for a replacement. I decided to copy the contents of the Micro SD card so that I could transfer the data to the new phone. When I removed the card, I noticed that the phone was functioning normally. I also received an error message when I inserted the SD card into my computer, that the SD card had errors that needed fixed. I fixed the errors, copied the files to the hard drive on my computer, and then re-formatted the SD card, and my phone is like new. The screen no longer flickers. This appears to be a fairly common problem with the Samsung phones that use Micro SD cards. My first suggestion is to remove the card if you have one, since it may be the cause of your flickering screen.

Turn off your Samsung Galaxy J7 completely. Then you have to press the following keys to turn the phone on again: " Power On/ Off "," Volume + " "Home" button . If the Samsung Galaxy J7 vibrates once, release the power on/ off button but keep the other two keys from the key combination pressed until a small menu appears on the screen. Now mark the entry "Wipe cache partition" with the volume down key. With the power on / off button the entry can be selected selected and the process gets started. This usually takes only a few seconds. Then the previously displayed menu appears again. Now select the first entry with "Reboot system now" and run the command again with a press of the power button. Your Samsung Galaxy J7 will now reboot. That's it. The reboot can now might take a few seconds longer. After that no more errors such as overheating, black or flickering screen or battery drain should occur with you phone

I just tried it. My phone is still flickering like !&&*. I use a J7

por

I just tried several of the solutions on this page, and none worked except for yours. My phone is the A3 2015 (A300-FU), and my screen was flickering green at low brightnesses.

I rebooted into recovery mode, and wiped the cache and the 'dalvik' cache. I have TWRP as my recovery, which gave me these options. I'm not sure if wiping the dalvik cache is necessary, and if perhaps it is included in the cache wipe process built into the stock Samsung recovery image.

I removed my SD card (as per other suggestions, considering the removal would allow greater power flow to the screen) before doing this. I don't think it had an effect on the process, but I should mention it anyway in case it did.

Thank you!

edit: it's just started doing it again whilst it was on charge. I didn't see it start. :(

I had this issue about two weeks after replacing a broken screen myself. I tried all the software solutions, but none worked for me (not allowing the screen to go dim did, but I didn't like that solution). The screen would also not turn on when pressing the power button. The issue with mine was the digitizer was not fully secured to the phone. If I pressed the top of the screen down (around the speaker and/or light sensor areas), the flickering would stop and the screen would turn on fine. I didn't use tape to replace my screen, but just let the residual glue hold it, which apparently was not enough. Also, I noticed the former screen popped right off without using any heat. It seems the hot summers and normal use wore the factory glue down to almost nothing. If the software fixes don't work for you, consider worn out glue and a digitizer separating from the phone as the issue.

Best of luck to you all!

My S5 developed this problem and it frustrated me. I had to swap with my sib's A3 but after a while the same flickering began. I tried most of the solutions here especially the developer option but what worked for me was disabling auto screen brightness and setting the screen at a medium to high level. I tried same on my previous S5 and disabling the power saving mode as well as the auto screen brightness solved the issue.

My S5 has been having this problem for months. The biggest issue for me is that it often takes a VERY long time to wake it from sleep. Sometimes it took as long as 10-minutes of repeatedly pressing the power button before the screen would stay lit.

I took it into the store to get it handled this weekend, and they wiped the memory, resetting to factory specs. Everything seemed fine for a few hours, but soon the trouble started back up. I went back in to get it fixed right, and he sentered me away saying it's probably a hardware issue and tried to get me to buy a new phone, but not before he fooled me into wiping the memory again. It was working fine for a little while again, until the auto updates had enough time to reintroduce the problem.

I've tried every solution I've seen, including the developer mode trick, turning off auto brightness, installing the screen filter app, pulling out the SD card (this at least lead to the flickering not happening when the screen dimmed before going to sleep), and a few of the more obscure suggestions. Nothing seems to work.

I am starting to believe that temperature is at least partially to blame for the problems. They have gotten worse recently, just as the weather has gotten colder and I turned down the temp in my house. Yet it seems to respond faster if it has been staying warm in my pocket. I'm going to test this theory and try to determine if it holds any weight.

Confirmed! I left the phone in a very warm area overnight and it turned right on this morning. After driving to work, it was having some trouble, so I pinched it under my arm against my chest for a minute and it came right on again.

It seems like its sweet spot is just a bit above 70 degrees, which it is more than capable of maintaining when the screen is on. Having it warmer than that doesn't appear to cause a problem. Just don't melt the circuits!

por

I'm having the same problem as you. But I've tried everything and nothing has fixed it. The only thing I have not tried is to go to a lower android version (to android lollipop) and if it does not work I will try to go to android kitkat, because when I had kitkat I had no problem. For those who still have the issue after trying the above solution, try clearing your cache partition:

With device off, press and hold these 3 buttons at the same time: Volume Up, Home, and Power.

2. When it vibrates, release Power key but keep pressing Vol. Up and the Home keys.

3. When Android System Recovery screen appears, release Vol. Up and Home keys.

4. Press Vol. Down to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’

5. Power to select.

6. When complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.

7. Power key to restart.

I had the same issue after upgrading to Android 5. Disabling HW overlay worked until recently on Android 6. My current solution is to always use rootdim to adjust the brightness and never lower the brightness below 30. If you need to lower the brightness further then use Kernel Adiutor and adjust the screen colour. Yes, this will need you to root your device. Or use a screen filter app.

I forgot to mention that you'll also need to run an app that fixes screen burn-in with the brightness switched to maximum for maybe 9 hours before using Rootdim.

Update 2: Got this fix from official Samsung S5 forums. Just had to turn off airview (under settings->motion tab) seems to have solved the problem permanently, even with autodim turned on and brightness turned to low. Likely this helps lower the total current requirement to the screen giving the AMOLED pixels a boost. So there is some need for certain amount of current going to the screen which has been made worse by the 6.0.1 update.

None of the other fixes worked except for the microSD card removal. Suspect removal of microSD card also boosts the available current to the screen, but Airview and motion sensor takes more power from the screen since that sensor likely draws power from the same circuit as the screen.

Like everyone my screen flickers at low brightness, or is about to turn off the screen "screen timeout" and when I place a call it was like this for almost a month and then it became worse. If it lock my phone or the screen times out, I cannot turn my screen back on. The phone works normally, the touch screen works and all the apps work fine but you cannot see anything (wonder how I know things are normal? I can make a call or launch an app by guessing there position on screen) later one day the screen turned on and I immediately installed "host for Samsung" by TeamViewer and started to control my phone from my PC. Then I saw that my screen some times can be turned on. So, I obesrved what is causing it to be able to turn on. The answer strangly is heat. Right now I am posting this from the same phone still with the same problem. If I heat my screen with a hair dryer or small room heater for 3 to 5 mins I can 100% be able to get me screen to work and so to further investigate I ordered some tools from ifixit. Right now I am waiting for them to be delivered.

Hope this helps both you guys and me too.

Cheers

  1. Disable auto brightness setting and shift to maximum.
  2. Select a screen saver (i.e random photos) that will activated when device is connected to charger.
  3. Connect charge and charge battery few hours at full bright and screen server activated. This will cause screen work at full brightness for few hours and change characteristics of amoled display a bit.
  4. Finally you will be able to use display at any brightness without flicker.
  5. This operation may be need to repeated sometimes.

I fixed it finally!

I did everything, reset, factory reset. I did a cache delete then reboot. Nothing worked. I turned off battery saver. I heard it was something do with power not getting properly to the display. Then I thought hey I just recently turned on biometrics for fingerprint unlock . I turned off EVERYTHING to do with finger print scanner and biometrics. Haven't had a problem since! Hope this helps. Try everything before getting new screen!
