After El Capitan install screen shut down, now won't startup

Hello everyone, new to the ifixit. Never had issues before this update, not glitches. So after updating to El Capitan, almost immediately, if I played a video and scrolled through another document my screen would shutdown, so I had to do a manual restart eventhough the computer itself seemed to be on, the screen was blacked out.

I stopped watching videos to avoid that. A week later the update to are Capitan came out so I updated. I still avoided videos while working on the homework.

After the second update, I couldn't even scroll through any kind of document because again the screen would shutdown.

Finally, the computer would not start. It went to the apple logo and status bar and right before I gets to load completely the screen shuts down. I've tried reinstalling from safe mode, but now when the El Capitan asks me to select the HD to install to two things happen, either there is no HD to select or it is locked. I tried 'journal enabling' from the disk repair, but the option is greyed out.

I've contacted apple and they told me I probably need a new hard drive or a new 'cable.' I refuse to believe my computer crapped out over a software update, but it worked just fine before the update. Never had an issue. Apple is saying that this was was probably gonna happen anyway, but there was no way to tell.

Help, please, I have midterms.

About 25% of my Mac business now involves bad hard drive cables. Replace it with a new one (not used).

In recovery mode the screen works just fine. One of the options in Recovery Mode is to use safari for help. I clicked on that just to see what would happen. Well, I ended up using it to do some homework on my school's blackboard site. Worked just fine. After that, I feel like it can't be a screen or hard drive related issue, but a software one.

If your machine is a retina MacBook there is no hard drive cable. It's an SSD that slots into the logic board.

Likelihood is that the disk needs repartitioning and a new OS installing.

In some cases Apple use "flash storage repair" diagnostics at the Genius Bar. Maybe worth checking your one does/doesn't need it

Hi JC,

I also faced the same issue. And, I was also told the same thing by Apple service center people, that there is an issue with my HDD. When I am going to recovery mode, I am not able to view my hard disk. Can you please let me know the steps you followed, so that I can also use my Mac for some time. Also, please let me know if you were able to found any alternative to this.

If you have a retina model you have a SSD not a HD. Unlike a HD your SSD is likely worn out and needs to be replaced. You could try reformatting it using a second Mac putting your system in Target Mode.
