Why does the lens won't operate

i formally had a problem of lens not extending to the normal length on start up. the camera would make two beep sounds and shut down again. I then used my fingers to retract the lens at start up and the camera worked well . afterwards i decided to lubricate the mechanical portion of the lens and since then the camera lens has worked fine. I therefore recommend that once in a while the camera lens should be lubricated with fine thin oil, the type used with sewing machines.
