Dell Dimension E510 Computer will not Boot Up

My desk top turns on but does not go through the normal process. It gets to a screen that the disc failed and I don't even have or need a disc to boot it up. Then it tells me to press F1 to continue. After I do that it prompts me to press enter to boot up normally. So that is what I do. Then the screen goes to showing a pulsing green line with Microsoft Corporation written under the green line and that's as far as it will go. Just sets there with that line and green thingy continually going across. I can't get passed this part of the booting process. What should I do? I am able to get to some settings that I can modify, but I should not have to do that as it was working fine two days earlier.

Solução escolhida

hey,

probably the boot sector failed.

is it windows 7 or another?

is the POST ok from the computer ( the power on self test) if you got an error : post the error , so we can see what the problem is.

you can also try ( after the DELL logo) to press F12, in the menu you choose diagnostics, press enter.

post the screen here after it's done.

other sollution : try to boot with a windows live cd. ( if you don't have one, search the internet on windows 7 iso ( if it is a windows 7 that you have) . Download the ISO en burn it on a bootable DVD.

reboot with the dvd. ( Don't forget to change the boot priority in the UEFI or BIOS)

after that try to do system recovery. ( You'll loose all data after the last backup.)

I think it will be a bad hard disk.

if it is : we can help you guide trough a clean install of windows and i and other mebers of this comunity can explain how to get your data back of the broken hard dsik.

good luck and let us know.

Update

what i forgot to say :

if you can't do a system recovery you can choose to start with command promt.

you can enter following commands , restart after every command is finished.

1.chkdsk /f /r

2.bootrec /fixboot

3.bootrec /fixmbr

4.bootrec /rebuilbcd

good luck

slumlordsf68, sound s like you are having issues with the hard drive. Enter the system startup and see if your hard drive is recognized under drives. If so, try to enter boot option and set yours to boot from the CD (optical ). Get a Live Linux CD (or similar boot CD) and see if your computer boots from that. If it does, you know that either your hard drive has failed or the computer has trouble accessing the system files. That would require a reinstall of your operating system. You can get the service manual as well as the owners manual for your computer from here

Entering System Setup

Turn on (or restart) your computer.

When the blue DELL™ logo appears, press <F2> immediately.

If you wait too long and the operating system logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Microsoft® Windows® desktop, then shut down your computer (see Turning Off Your Computer) and try again."
