Is the repairman correct?

Liquid (milk) damaged iphone 6 had screen and battery replace at repair shop. Everything seemed to be working on phone perfectly but when repairman tried testing my network carrier he said it wasn't reading my SIM card. Tried different card, powering down, not sure what else. Was told that the liquid messed up something in my phone that won't allow it to connect to a carrier. That my phone can not be fixed. Makes no sense to me how everything works perfectly even wifi just can't be used as a phone. In the process of having damaged non working parts put back on phone instead of paying for replacement parts just for phone that now is just "a tablet" now. Can another repairman be able to repair the damaged area that allows phone to find service from SIM card? Really hate to just trash a new iphone6. Help please!!!!

Katie Jackson, is there any chance you can post some images of the SIM card reader as well as of the components around it? this could simply be a shorted component for the SIM card detection function

Picking it back up tomorrow! Most certainly can post images. Want to go to next repair place with as much information as possible. So any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

You should've asked him how he cleaned it.

If he never used an ultrasonic cleaner, then he hasn't done a proper job, if he didn't remove the EMI shields on the logic board, he didn't do a job at all.

I've had quite a high success rate of getting phones to work after liquid damage, using an ultrasonic cleaner and removing the EMI shields, as not removing these won't allow the cleaner to do an effective job.

If he used a toothbrush and 99.9% isopropyl alcohol, then he shouldn't call that cleaning as using that alone is not that effective compared to ultrasonic cleaning. :-)

His response, to asking about cleaning process, was that when he changed the screen (which was oblivious it needed) & then figured out battery wire was broken that my phone was all repaired that could be repaired. In my case that means it works perfectly except for can't be used as a phone. I don't feel that this particular technician knows how to fix that issue if it could be fixed especially if knowing milk had damaged it but didn't bother cleaning the main parts because replacements seemed to fix it.

I think I'm having him replace my old "damaged parts" and taking my it to another place to be serviced. Hate to doubt someone's job ability or efforts but to me "liquid damage repair" is not just replacing parts. I feel like they did no cleaning of the inside thinking that it was fixed.

Replacing the parts is very pointless if he isn't cleaning the board at all I'm afraid, I would take it somewhere a bit more professional, at this rate, you will probably be better off getting a new phone, as it sounds like he hasn't got a clue at what he is doing.

The standard procedure he should have done at least would have been something along the lines of:

Disassemble phone, get logic board out, remove EMI shields, place in a good ultrasonic cleaner, use toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol to remove any other visible corrosion, clean up connectors on parts etc. place logic board in tub of isopropyl alcohol to displace any remaining cleaning fluid and water etc. let it dry, test logic board on known working housing with good known working parts, if that was all good, he then should of put it back in old housing and then figured out if anything was not working.

A few more advanced things he should have done would of been to check for any damaged capacitors, reflow any bad connectors etc. things like that.

I think the "repairman" you have taken it to, shouldn't be offering liquid damage repair if he doesn't even clean the logic board or parts.

I hope you find a decent repairman and get your phone sorted, let us know how it goes! :-)

Honestly, no.

But, you can replace the logic board which has the sim card reader, your personal data, and some other stuff attached onto it. It would cost about $350 just for the part! Im really sorry for you! I hope all goes well.

Also maybe try going to the apple store just to see what they say.

Yeah he did say that I could buy that part as well but $350 for that plus screen and battery. Prob less headache to buy a new one if that's the only fix. Would be my best bet to purchase that piece if I didn't need a screen and battery. Fear that replacing it is the only way to have my beloved iphone6 again. Back to using my 4 now and it's killing me. Thanks for your help.

Quite simply, electronics don't like liquids. If you are so paranoid about having a perfectly functioning phone which it sounds like you are, avoid the headache at this point and just cough up your insurance deductable or pay for a discounted replacement at Apple and get a brand new iPhone and a waterproof case.

I think you may have misunderstood my post and my meaning of "perfectly functioning phone". It's not that it has a scratch on the screen and I just can't tolerate seeing it. Without it reading my SIM thus finding my service carrier, it's not a 'functioning' phone at all merely an XS tablet with wifi. Thanks for your answer post, but in this case I was seeking a bit more technical knowledgeable advice.
