Why won't my battery hold a charge

My samsung galaxy tab 3 suddenly shut off and wouldn't turn on or charge. I figured it was battery so I purchased a new battery, installed it and the tablet charging icon came on and the tablet booted up but I noticed the tablet wasn't charging it was simply draining and now it's back to not charging or turning on. I have no cule what the problem is at this point. Please help
