New RAM not responding.

Hi all,

I Installed new RAM details below, then when I switch on the computer, nothing but the fan appears to function, left it a few minutes (5) but nothing happened so tried with just one module of 8GB and the same result.

I reinstalled the old RAM and the MAC is now working as before? ideas....

My MAC is the following....

  • OS Yosemite
  • Version 10.10.3
  • MacBook Pro Mid 2010
  • Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
  • Current Memory 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Trying to upgrade to 16 GB RAM (2X 8GB)

Is the "Unbuffered, Non-ECC, Non-Registered" the issue

New RAM details

Solução escolhida

The problem is that you have the wrong replacement RAM module. RAM requires that you match the specs very precisely.

You can find the existing RAM specs in System Profiler, or by running the following terminal command:

system_profiler SPMemoryDataType

Match the speed (MHz), and whether or not it uses parity bits (ECC).

You can also look up the maximum defined memory that the system can reliably use. It's not going to be a given that you can install 16 GB. If memory serves, that model can accept 8GB without trouble.

To add specifics to trodriguez's point: You're using RAM that's two generations newer than your computer was designed for. A Mid 2010 MBP uses PC3-8500 DDR3 RAM (1066 MHz); you've installed PC3-12800 DDR3 RAM (1600 MHz). The first generation of MBP that used the faster RAM was the Mid 2012 generation.

Sometimes RAM can scale down to work over a slower bus, but it's not a sure thing. Your best bet is to get the PC3-8500 RAM your machine is designed to use. iFixit doesn't carry 8GB SODIMMs in this speed, but OtherWorld Computing has a 16GB kit for your generation. I'd check with the retailer you got your current RAM from first, and see what the charge will be to swap it for the correct speed.
