Sega Gamegear won't work.Searching for answers on what needs replacing

My gamegear is having issues and I'm not sure what needs to be replaced so I was hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction. When I turn the system on the red "ON" indicator light lights up for about 2-3 seconds and then goes out. The screen doesn't illuminate at all during the brief 2-3 second period either. My guess is the screen or logic board need to be replaced but I'm not sure. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help

You need to replace the capacitors inside the game gear. there are 3 boards that they need to be replaced on. The power board, the audio board, and the main board. Its not difficult, but time consuming since you have to remove the old capacitors, clean the solder pads, and solder on new capacitors. Search online for capacitor replacement kits. You will need to know what revision your game gear is, this is located inside the case of the game gear printed on the mainboard.

Yup, this is the only way to get it going. I've repaired 4 game gears in this manner with all the common problems: no sound, no power, green screen or barely visible screen. Replacing the caps is not all that bad, just watch some youtube videos and pay attention to the cap slot your replacing, the µF (microfarad) needs to be the same while the V (voltage) can be the same or usually higher. Any kits you get off of eBay should come with with a guide so you know which caps to replace where. The main boards will usually be either VA1, VA2 or the VA4 (which I believe is a bit rare).

My late uncle's Game Gear is a VA4 board and I'm still having green screen issues with it, sadly, after replacing the caps in the proper order.

Thank you both for your suggestions! I've purchased the capacitors but have yet to find the time to install them.

@zerrian I just managed to fix my bloody VA5 Game Gear. I had the same greenish screen you described. The capacitor on the power pcb was defect. 22qf one.

I hope this helps! Let me know.
