iPhone 5 home button doesn't work after dock connector replacement

I had charging issues with my iPhone 5, so I ordered a new lightning port connector. I installed it and the charge issues are no more. Now the home button doesn't work. I tried shorting the two gold prongs while the phone was open and it did not trigger the home button.

If I connect the old lightning connector cable and try shorting the gold prongs, the home button works fine.

This could only mean that the lightning connector I ordered is faulty? I installed it correctly with washers and such, and the metal flex cable that wraps around the headphone jack lies on top just like in the guide photos.

Definitely a faulty new connector. If you short the prongs and get nothing, there isn't much else to explain that. I will say that while this may or may not be true with you, I have "fixed" many lightning cable connectors bu simply cleaning out the port itself. Pocket lent and other dust like to accumulate and pack down inside, preventing the cable from clicking in all the way. you can use a paper clip or if you have some pointy tweezers, and just scrape it out (Careful just to scrape the "bottom" of the hole and not the sides). But if that doesn't work definitely see if you can get the new port replaced from wherever you ordered it from.

Thank you for the quick answers. Headphone jack, microphone, speaker and charging works. It's only the home button that doesn't work. The reason to why I replaced the old connector was because the phone indicated a drained out battery with a red symbol, and didn't charge when usb cable was plugged in. I completely cleaned out the connector from lint (there was some) but the problem still existed. I tried reseting phone, and suddenly it could charge fully once. But after one charge, and drain, the problem was back. It occured after dropping the phone, and denting the lower left corner. I will have to get a new port then.

I have the same problem and what I figured out was that there was a missing ribbon on the new charging port unit, one that popped up over on the top of the unit.

There is a work around, by changing the accessibility features and turning on touch assist.
