My touch sensitive volume controls have quit working.

I cannot control volume of the laptop from the touch sensitive controls above the keyboard. Neither the mute button or the minimum to maximum volume slider will work. This failure occurred quite recently and may have even happened after a downloaded update came from HP. Is there anyway to fix this issue?
