Bottom half of screen disappears - appears when pressure is applied

Had the laptop for a few years now - Now the bottom half of the screen completely disappears and just shows random vertical dark hue lines. If i put a little pressure on the bottom left of the screen with a finger, it goes back to normal - once pressure is releases - it goes back to garbled lines. - Is this simply a screen connection - or is the screen fried?

any advice is much appreciated! (before i take it in for $$$$$)

Update

Follow up question for model S/N ending yx63 with same problem. Screen on initial start up (before logo appears) often has non responsive lower half that flickers from responsive to multi-hued mess that can often but not always cured by pressure on various places on left of screen. At times screen may work for a few days with no problems as long as it is not moved. When screen is shared with my iMac it does not show the distortions.

Can I confirm problem is LVDS cable not the screen without installing new cable?

Does the fact that the screen picture from the MacPro shows up clearly on iMac preclude the problem being caused by GPU failure?

Yes, It's not a GPU issue. I would start with the most inexpensive replai which is the LVDS cable. If that doesn't help...then u can start looking at the display itself as the culprit.

jody, having followed this for a while, I say you are having a TAB defect. TAB (Tape Automated Bonding) is one of the most common functional failures found on LCD screens whether notebook, Macbook or TV. Those manifest as horizontal and vertical line or block defects. By applying pressure to the loose bond, you temporarily bridge the bond and your screen looks normal. There are a few companies that specialize in that repair, but most likely a new display is the right way to go. Hope this helps, good luck.

I would check the LVDS cable that connects your display to the Logic Board, if that cable is properly seated and not frayed at all, the youre looking at a display replacement.

Hello, your screen flickering problem will likely be isolated to that LCD cable that attaches to your logic board. As time goes on (in addition to the heat within that compartment) the constant opening and closing of the laptop can cause that LCD cable to develop a "weak" spot in a certain part of the cable.

At the connection end to the logic board, the wires that runs into that connector can EASILY break (those wires are VERY thin and cannot stand a whole lot of Up and Down movement or twisting at that end) which in turn will cause a sudden "shutdown" (aka-Hardware failure).

Providing that the lower half of your screen was not exposed to any fluid, the concern of a replacement screen should not be a concern. Zero in on that LCD cable, that is where I would start and most likely your problem will END there.

As original poster and in response to Charles Fisher,I agree that intuitively the problem would be the cable. I have taken my MacPro apart several times to replace the upper case and mess with the cable and hinges. When it is apart no matter how I mess with the cable I cannot get the problem to occur. Jiggling the cable or pinching the screen has no effect. But when I put it together the problem occurs intermittently and is generally fixed by pressure on the bottom left of the screen or the bezel.

The location where the pressure seems to be effective does not conform directly to the cable location so I am not sure exactly what is happening. One of these days I will buy a cable & give it a try.

While I am using the problem device to type this my wife is not too happy when she has to start stroking the computer to make it conform to her wishes.

Finally had some time to replace the LCD cable - unfortunately didn't work - and the monitor has the same problem - bottom half of screen disappears - but will reappear if i put pressure on it in a "sweet spot" in which it comes back as normal. For now i just put a clamp on the "sweet spot" and it works fine other than the obstruction of the clamp on the monitor. Must be the screen itself. ughh.
