Here's the EveryMac web site specs for your system: MacBook Pro 15" 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (Unibody).
Yes, your system can support upto 8.0 GB of RAM - Two 4.0 GB memory modules (PC3-8500 DDR3, 1066 MHz or faster).
You will want to first make sure your systems firmware is upto date. Follow this Apple T/N: EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.
Here's the IFIXIT guide to open the system to get to the RAM slots: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2008 and Early 2009 RAM Replacement. Do be careful as the tabs are easy to break and you do want to take some basic ESD precautions as static electricity can damage the modules.

It can, but don't pass go without getting an SSD. RAM won't make any difference, SSD will! Put money into the upgrade that will matter.

4 gigs of RAM barely gets the 64 bit OP SYS off the ground. 8 gigs and tweaking the virtual memory will keep most of what is done in the RAM and off the hard drive. Not only will the system be faster but, given the age of the machine - more bang for the buck. RAM for this can be had for a song. Virtual memory on an SSD is faster than platter but, not as fast as actual RAM, especially matched sticks and their added bandwidth. After 8 gigs of RAM in a modern system a SSD is the next smartest step that takes away the agony of sitting in front of the screen.
Very True! @ABCellars - Memory first then Drive. SSHD or better yet SSD if you can afford it.
