"stained" inside of retina display

Hi everyone,

I have a late 2013 retina macbook pro 13. Last month my wife dropped a bit of water on it. I took it to a local mac technician and he checked it out. All seemed fine but he told me he was going to clean he inside. After he did, my screen seems stained. I don't know if the cleaner went inside the screen, if the inverter got damaged or if the display went bad in another way. I have been using it for over 3 weeks like this. I can use an external monitor with it without issues. Also, I can use the laptop's display to search the internet and things that don't require color accuracy like photo editing, but it's really bad. I was going to order a display assembly for it, but thought I would look for opinions here first. I have attached a few picks with white background so you can see the problem. The bottom is ok in brightness but the rest is all messed up. Thanks!

Anyone have a suggestion on where to buy the display assembly? I fixit has been out of stock for a while. I would be installing myself. Thanks!

That was from the spill, not the technician. The technician cleaned the board, not the screen. The liquid is from the original spill. Even a really, really dumb technician knows there is no cleaning the inside of a screen, nor would they pour liquid inside an LCD.

You'll have to replace the assembly. LCD by itself won't help because liquid got on the back diffusor layers. Expect cost to be $300 to $400. :(

Hi thanks for the quick response. The screen was perfect for about 2 weeks after the spill. The tech just suggested cleaning it to stop corrosion from developing.Right after he cleaned it, when the mac booted, the screen was like that. He didn't clean the inside of the screen per se, he didn't even clean the outside. What he did do was left it to dry with the screen on the table and the open bottom sideways(like an L) I was there with him when he cleaned it and left it to dry a bit. We think the alcohol he used on the logic board drained down and since he screen was at the bottom it might have gone in it ??????? not sure.

On a side note, i see ifixit is out of stock for my displays. Any suggestions for another place to buy?

You can clean the inside of the screen with 91%+ alcohol and replace the sheets behind it and back light from a cracked LCD of the same model. Most of the water damage is on the sheets. I've walked people here on ifixit through it before, obviously have done it myself. I guess that means I am really dumb and don't use my brain.

@abcellars - have you been into a Retina display yet? This is very different animal and I have not repaired one yet.

@mayer - Actually no I haven't but I saw a good video on their screen replacement here, put out by L. Rossmann. Since I haven't accomplished the feat on this screen. Maybe I should not have opened mouth and inserted foot. But, I've done a great many things people say can't be done, including replacing the diffuser on LCD screens. If I remember correctly you told me it couldn't be done on a 27" iMac but, the person followed my steps and reported that they did it too. I believe iFixit user jessabethany reported doing very similar on iPhone 6 screens with water damage. By the way I did vote this up because the gist of the answer is correct. I only commented here to open peoples minds. A closed mind is the best thing to lose when you want to move forward.

@abcellars long video but I'll watch it today, thanks for the link

hdphotoart you can spend a lot of money on the new LCD or you could try to disassemble the complete panel and clean the diffuser etc. Right now you don't have anything to lose.

I got the same prob to my Mac Pro Ratina right now. I am going to bury it in a sack of rice for the night and see what happens. I will let you know. Someone told me that she did restored her iPhone, after it fell into a bucket full of water, and it worked.
