Clean Installing Yosemite - Hard Drive not recognized

My hard drive died recently so I replaced it, but now, in the process of trying to clean install Yosemite via a flash drive, I'm having a problem. To install Yosemite on the flash drive I used DiskMaker X 4b4, upon the suggestion of this post: http://lifehacker.com/how-to-burn-os-x-y....

When I try to install Yosemite from the flash onto my new hard drive, though, my computer isn't recognizing the presence of my hard drive - the only device it's recognizing is the flash drive. When I look in Disk Utility, though, it recognizes my hard drive.

Any advice?

That sorta makes sense here...

First your drive is virgin so you do need to prep it by setting up a partition on it via Disk Utility. Once the partition is created you can then install onto it the OS.

But before we go there, is your USB drive booting up under OS-X correctly, and the OS installer is able to run - Correct?

If so you should be all set from that side of the issue. But, did you make sure the systems firmware was upto date? If not follow this Apple T/N: EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs. Also did my make sure you got the correct HD? Your systems SATA port is SATA II (3.0 Gb/s). Not all HD's will work in your system reliably! If you give us the drives make & model we can double check it for you.

Hi, thanks so much for getting back to me!

I wasn't aware of partitioning until you brought it up, and based on a little research I've done, I'm not sure I need to partition the drive at all. Still, I gave it a whirl just to see if it would help and was unable to do it - the error message "Unable to write to the last block of the device" keeps showing.

My USB drive is booting up under OS-X correctly and the OS installer is running.

I am pretty sure I got the proper hard drive, through iFixit: 500 GB SSD Hybrid 2.5" Hard Drive / Drive Only. It's the correct drive for my 2009 MacBook Pro 13", right?

I don't know about firmware but I checked out the link you provided and step one for checking your firmware is going to "About this mac" under the Apple tab - this is not an option on my computer right now - Startup Disk, Restart, and Shut down are the only options. I don't know what firmware is, but does it make a difference that I had Yosemite on my computer before my HD crashed?

Thanks for your help,

Emma

Yes, even if you don't plan to create multiple partitions you still need one! It woulds like you aren't really booting up under the USB drive. Shut your system down and restart it, but this time press the Option key so the Boot-up Manager shows up then you can select the USB drive. As to the firmware once your system is booted up with the USB drive try again it should be an option, if not you have another problem here.
