Looking to add a SSD

Hi.

I got late 2013 iMac 27", Haswell system.

I need a SSD that works in this version of iMac. Do you know where I can find one?

Thank you

To start with please review this IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2639 SSD Replacement. This is a very big job to even get to the M.2 SSD slot to put in the SSD blade drive. In fact none of the third parties are even offering SSD's for the newer 'Thin' Series of iMac's.

OK, thats the bad news... Here's the good news!

While it is still a big job it's a lot easier to replace the hard drive with a better drive. Here is the IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2639 Hard Drive Replacement. Then you can put in a 3.5" SSHD hybrid drive or dual SSD/HD drive. Both Western Digital and Seagate offer units. But there is a small wrinkle here. So far only Seagate offers a directly compatible drive (newest version) and is available.

If you go with any other drive you'll need this adapter cable: OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for Hard Drive Upgrade for 27" iMacs 2012 and Later.

Hi...

Thanks for the answer..

So the size I need to buy is 3.5" ?

por

Yes, its a 3.5" drive. The newer 21" model (thin series) uses a 2.5"

Hi..

Tell me please, if I want SSD, which one would you recommend ?

I don't mind adding the adapter cable.

I don't recommend going with a straight SSD here. Between the cost and getting a drive with less storage its just not with it at this time. Sure, the price of an SSD will continue to drop and there will be a time point were I'll change my mind here, but thats not today.

You also have a physical size issue as most SSD's are 2.5" designed for laptop use not the larger 3.5" desktop size. Thats not to say you can't get an adapter frame. But thats the rub, as you'll need one that can support the drive and still fit into the systems drive anchor points. So far I've not found one that I've been fully happy with. Bottom Line here: Stick with the SSHD's you'll be happier! You'll get the zip of the SSD and the deep storage of a standard HD. And it costs less!

These iMacs have a dedicated slot for the SSD, so you can make your own Fusion drive, or just combine an SSD with your HDD. I did this to my iMac, but i did not want to merge them as a fusion drive. You should check the model, it is the PCie one. Check the picture
