To start with your older system may not be able to run Windows 7. Have you checked to see if it is supported? If not I think you'll need to re-think things.

My older system just needs a few updates. I was going to buy a KVM device to connect both computers to and view on one monitor. I just want to know how to go about to do this.

The KVM cable just plugs in like a standard Keyboard, Video & Mouse (KVM) for each system which is then accessed either directly though the same box to a real Keyboard, Video & Mouse which is switched between the different systems via a switch or function key reassignment via software or firmware of the KVM unit. You could also be accessing the KVM remotely if it is one that offers that function.

But I'm confused here how this has to do with upgrading your Windows XP system. If you have a system that supports Windows 7 then all you need to do is get the needed OS upgrade DVD and have a license key for it (not used on a different system). Place the DVD in the optical drive and launch the installer application.
