2 Why won't the radio recognize a pressed button?
The display is functional, but none of the buttons accomplish anything.

Take a look at the troubleshooting guide.
The buttons could be covered in a foreign material, (root beer, for example) and simply need cleaning. If there is no obvious material present on the buttons, they could need to be replaced.
