Does anyone know what the problem is,is it the display screen, there is still light but no details and around an hour after that stopped working the sound stopped too, so it is totally useless now! Any recommendations as per what to do?

Try to reset the Device using the iTunes software.
I own a iPod Nano 3rd Gen myself and I was screaming at Apple to fix the battery charging problem. The next update resolved that.
I had never had the screen go out mysteriously but it seems that you can manually reset your device with the click wheel center and menu buttons pressed at the same time after unswitching the hold button on the bottom.

It sounds like the logic board has crashed! Have you had it near water or moisture?
