Upgrading RAM on A1278 MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro 13" A1278 2.9 GHz i7 Mid-2012

I have already customized it with a 1TB HD and a 1TB SSD.

I want to upgrade the memory from the current 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3 to 16GB.

The earlier A1278 had 1333 Mhz RAM — I am hoping to install 2 x 8GB of 1600 GHz RAM.

I can't find the 1600 GHz RAM on this site — is it available?

First you do need to check your systems firmware to make sure its current. Follow this Apple TN: EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.

As to upgrading your systems memory: Yes you can use two 8 GB memory modules. The needed memory is:

Double Data Rate Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module (DDR3) format

  • - 67.6mm x 30mm (1.18 inch)
  • - 204-pin
  • - PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 MHz

Here is what we use: Crucial

The 1600 MHz units are now difficult to find as its no longer being made as far as I've heard. You may end up needed to look at eBay to find a set just be careful as there are a few sellers who are setting junk!

@hrcv - This is a very old answer! (2015). If you have a unibody system then yes you can upgrade its RAM. If on the other hand have a retina system. Sadly no as the RAM is soldered in that series.

Why don't you create a new question with your info and what you are trying to do.

My 2012 MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.3 15" Retina (A1398) has a dead battery, dead GPU and a heavily distorted screen. In short, the machine is in a coma.

On the other hand, my "Core i5" 2.5 13" Mid-2012 is unused and still brand new.

Can I use the parts like SSD, Ram etc. from the ‘dead’ retina machine, to upgrade the non-retina MBP?

Thanks in advance
