Will OS recovery overwrite hard drive?

My Mac Book Pro (13" 2014) wouldn't boot past the gray apple (even in safe mode). I am looking at doing an operating system recovery from the Cmd-R boot option. From Disk Utility in (recovery mode) I see a small Base System and a 500 HD. The recovery only lets me choose the HD. My question is: will recovering onto the HD overwrite the data on the HD? I had expected to see two partitions on the HD, one for the operating system and one for the data but I just see the HD by itself. I wouldn't want to wipe out my data in the process. (I am out of the country and do not have access to a lot of resources for backups.)

The Recovery and test partitions are there, but they are "invisible" to the OS, and all they can access is the OS and perhaps TImeMachine (for recovery). You can't use them to mount other volumes as you are booted into a utility, not a full blown OS.

This is a software not a hardware issue (we specialize in Hardware fixes) and would be better, and faster addressed at Apple Discussions' for your MBP - R.

I have not had to fix one of these problems recently enough to know more than what I've said and suggested.
