Hard Drive Access enormous slow?

Hi there,

according to my short description I have some trouble with an MBP Mid 2012, here is the prob:

Since a few days the device was getting really slow. Every action within the GUI is rally fast but as soon as it comes to accessing the hard drive the beach volleyball of doom appears for about 1 minute (cpu 95% no action, 6 of 8 gb ram are unused). First thing I suggested was the hard drive being damaged. So I installed a complete new and fresh formatted drive which was used in another MBP (2009). I know this hard drive is 100% working.

Unfortunately accessing this drive is also damned slow. In my opinion that means that the error has to be somewhere between the drive and the logic board.

Everything that could be caused by a software problem has been checked. I also reseted every RAM you can think of.

Apple Support checkt also everything that could case that slowness but wasn't able to help me at all.

The MBP is nearly new. It was always treated very carefully and has not even a single scratch on it.

Does anyone has an idea or hint what could be damaged?

The MBP is not "nearly new" in fact the current drive is 5 going on 6 years old, the original was 2 years old. The case may look "nearly new" but that's not the same thing.

Help us help you. The more complete the description of your problem is (what OS you're using, what Application you're using when you see the slowdown, are there peripherals attached, did you add anything new (peripheral or app or update) right before this behavior initiated, a full compete description, the text or screen shot of any error messages) the more assistance we can provide, and, the sooner we can provide it..

One reason could be a near full boot volume - you should have 10-20% free space on it for VMEM and swap files, the more free space the better.

Other reasons - wireless/network signal, over heating, too many open programs

You could have a bad SATA cable. You could be running lots of apps in the background (we don't know - that Apple couldn't find anything with tests - doesn't rule out a background app using resources in your normal user configuration) You can use Activity Monitor to check that.

Put the original drive in an external case and try booting from that - is it still as slow? No=confirmation of SATA problem… yes=drive hardware, or fragmentation problem.

Try making a new user account - often strange behavior can be caused by a corrupt preference or font. Changing drives without completely starting a new user account from scratch could transfer your corruption leaving the cause unchanged.

FWIW instead of using an older HD I would have tried a new one. The old one could have fragmentation or hardware problems too.

Sometimes Apple Hardware Test (diagnostic) must be run 2 or 2x in succession to find a problem related to overheating or use. Apple may have only run it once. You could try running it a couple of times to see if there is a CPU or sensor problem.
