MacBook shuts off by itself, won't stay/turn on

Hi everyone,

i have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.53 ghz mid 2009 with mavericks.

For the past year or so I had the service battery icon which I ignored due to busy schedule and being mostly connected to a power line.

Yesterday it started shutting down by itself and when I try to turn it back on, seconds after the login, it shuts off. The battery lights on the side shows that it's not charging, there's only a blinking one. The MagSafe light is solid green.

Until yesterday it was fine ish, it could only last a couple of hours but was working perfectly fine.

Edit: after leaving it unplugged for a night, now it won't even turn on.

Could it be only a battery problem? Wouldn't it turn on when plugged in even if the battery is dead?

Of course it happened while I'm traveling and not home, and here there are no apple stores, I can fix it myself, but I would like to know if it could be just the battery or something more serious before opening the wallet.

Tried resetting smc and pram but nothing worked.

First things first I would recomend you to remove the battery and test the Macbook. Second i would download a program to test core temps. Worst possible conclusion is a dying cpu or gpu.

Thanks, as soon as I get the proper screwdrivers I will remove the battery. Is it ok if I turn it on without it though? I remember vaguely that it could cause some problems.

Btw, it shouldn't cause any problems but just to add an extra info, mac bought and used mainly on European soil, which means 240 V, now I'm on American 110 V with appropriate plug.

Any suggestions on the program to test the core temps?

This might be worth a shot - TemperatureMonitor

Also I'd lean towards it being a bad battery. A bad battery can act like a brick of resistance in your computer's circuitry.

Are you still using your original cable? It might be time to replace it as well.
