Changing my Hard Drive To a Western Digital Hybrid Drive

A friend as give me a Western Digital Black Solid State SSD Hybrid Drive 1TB SATA with 8GB SSD 7mm Slim Model number WD10S21X.

I've tried to find out if this drive is compatible with my mac but can't find any info whats so ever! No such drive exists on WD website so could be discontinued. Emailed WD but no luck and they've told me to phone them direct which I will do on Monday. But just thought I'd try ifixit as well. Don't want to try and fit this into my Mac and find out its not compatible !

Seems like it was manufactured for Lenovo think pads. I think you're only giving/using part of the model/ID numbers. I found with Google in about 30 sec.

Sounds like it is a dual storage solution, and not listed for Mac's on their site.

Try contacting them here.

The form and throughput may meet your boxes requirement but the extensions (aka drivers) may not be available - don't know how/if it would work if you just plugged it in and formatted it GUID.

I think your friend gave you a 2.5" WD Black 2 dual drive.

Its a single device that is in fact two drives (a SSD and a HD) sandwiched together.

Sadly, they haven't offered a version for the Mac laptops.

You will want to go with the Seagate SSHD drive if you need a new drive. Unlike the WD drive this is a HD with a deep SSD cache.

There is now support to install Western Digital Black 2 for max OSX simple download

Re flash firmware was simple this takes few min 5 ?

Two programs utility set drive as two drives or single Fusion drive .

I've installed both ways

2 drive instal and the Fusion drive

Few things will need to be changed in systems setting

Turn on Trim with simple command line instructions or a 3rd party free programs

I always choose command like .

Performance

This drive is mid range for performance index

Ssd is around 50% speed performance under Samsung or crucial tops performers .

SSD is defently a performer over normal Plater Hard drive!

I recommend this drive to all my clients .

Can you post a link for this firmware update, and any relevant WD comments on OSX? The current firmware posted on WD's site (v5865, posted 03/04/2014) is installed with DOS, and WD makes no comment on having added OSX compatibility.

The current state of affairs is that WDC's tech notes (from August 2014) list support for OS X 10.9 only. I suspect that it will work under Yosemite as well; WDC just hasn't updated the site since the 10.10 release. Note that WDC's utilities require the Black2 drive to be installed in the disk0 slot (the connector normally occupied by the default boot drive), and will attempt to take over whatever drive is installed there. So be careful.

Just so its clear here: The intent to to have this as the only physical drive in the system or as adlerpe pointed out it must be the primary drive. We currently have one in a MacBook Pro running Yosemite for evaluation. So far so good.

That is not the western black dual, its a western digital solid state hybrid hard disk (SSHD) u can't manage the ssd part, and the disk is pretty much like any other mechanical HDD but it have a larger cache (8gb NAND flash - the ssd part) that make it better than a convetional HDD.

@Diego Gomez - Check the URL link in my post above. Yes, this is a real dual drive setup unlike Seagates SSHD. WD had announced they were going to do one then pulled the plug! All they offer is a 3.5 drive under the Toshiba brand and only as an OEM product. I've tried it out not bad, wish they had offered Mac support when it first came out, we would have bought a ton of them.
