Why won't steam come out?

i have had my Barista for about 8 years and love it!!!! I have been traveling and it has been unused for about a month. I cleaned the water tray, filled it with water, then put the hose into the water, and turned the button on. The machine made its usual noises like it was working properly, i let the brew cycle run for a little bit to prep it, but when i got to the steam stage, no steam came out. so i tried to prep it again still no steam. HELP!!!!

Did water come out of the machine when you pressed the brew button? If not, you may need to force-prime the machine to get it working again. Using a turkey baster or similar tool, squeeze water up the hose while the pump is running. Once the water flows through put the hose back into the water tank and allow it to run for another 10-20 seconds to ensure the boiler is full. Then it should be ready for use.

This repair guide provides a procedure to test the Steam thermostat switch (attached to the boiler). No need to disassemble, just requires a multi-meter - Schematic and Troubleshooting Starbucks Barista SIN 006.

There are very few components in the steam circuit - it will likely be either the 125 deg. thermostat or the micro switch attached to the steam valve. Opening the steam valve should turn the pump on. If not, the problem will be related to the micro-switch wiring, or possibly the cam that operates the switch when the valve is opened may have just come loose and is not turning the pump on.

You're correct about the thermostat, but neither the steam valve switch nor the pump play a role in steam production. They are only active when the machine is in coffee/hot water mode.

The Steam function requires 2 things:

  1. The 2nd stage heater element heats the water to the higher temperature
  2. The Steam valve be opened and clear

The heating stage is a function of the electrical elements - the switch, the thermostat, and the heater element - they must be working properly in order to heat the water.

The Steam wand only requires that the Steam valve be working properly, and the wand be free of obstruction.

Troubleshooting: the steam valve has a small locking screw that can become loosened and then it will fail to operate the internal valve when the knob is turned. Or the valve can become corroded internally. Either of those conditions could cause the steam to fail or not flow fully.

If you have knowledge in repairing then try the following but frist try solution from Henry

First locate your steam pump most coffee machine I repaired have steam pump seperately, so you need to run the pump directly to the power it should be rated on how much voltage it works with. if the pump does not work then you need to replace it remember pump can be repaired also.

If the pump works then you have problem some where else that is the driver for pump mostly electronic board.

Try upto here n tell me so that i can guide you further.

This machine does not have a separate steam boiler (what you are calling a pump?), when the steam button is depressed the coffee boiler is heated to steam temperature. The pump does not function in steam mode, the pressure of the boiler is all that propels the steam out and through the steam wand. This machine also does not have any kind of circuit board in it.

You're correct, the pump does not operate when the steam switch is pressed - my mistake. If there's no steam, either there's no water in the boiler, the water isn't being heated hot enough to create the pressure, or the steam line/valve is plugged. The steam valve has a small "floating" stem that could become corroded and stay in the closed position when the valve is opened.

The easiest way to test is to run water through the steam wand without pressing the steam switch - just press the power button and open the steam valve. If it works, there should be steam - if not, the steam circuit needs to be cleared.

I am having a similar issue with very weak and limited steam during the steam cycle. The inside of my boiler is sparkling clean, and water gets fully heated during the brew cycle, but NOT during steam cycle...just a small spurt of water and a tiny bit of steam. I get loads of hot water from the brewhead. High and low heat boiler thermostats, 3 panel switches, and boiler fuse has been checked and are working.. I even went overboard and did a one-by-one replacement of 3 panel switches, boiler fuse, and boiler thermostats. Same results - very little steam. I am pulling out my hair with frustration. Any thoughts that could help me would be much appreciated/

I forgot to mention that I always wait for the green ready light when running the brewhead. After I run my hot water and empty coffee from my portafilter, I wait for the green ready light to come on again. What's VERY curious is that I wait for the ready light to return, then I push the steam button. But the green ready light should go out at this point, MY GREEN READY LIGHT STAYS ON WHEN I PUSH THE STEAM BUTTON. Your thoughts?
