I tore my cable to my touch ID, what can I do?

I was trying to repair my iPhone due to being wet from water, when I accidentally pulled the phone apart too quickly and ripping my touch ID cable. What can I do?

Locate the barcode on the connector and the cable, scan them, ask the cable supplier if it's possible to print/etch the barcodes onto the new cable. If you get the new cable with the barcode done, you can still get warranty after you clean the phone from water stains.

These are actually warranty fraud techniques, you take all responsibilities.

EDIT: now some workshops in China offer to splice the Touch ID cable back together.

You will need to replace the cable.

The good news is that replacement home button flex cables are readily available, both here on iFixIt and on other online retailers, and installation is fairly straight forward:

iPhone 5s Home Button Assembly

The bad news is that you will never regain TouchID functionality. The logic board will only recognize the original home button/TouchID cable for that feature. There is no way around this. In the mean time while you wait for a replacement part, activate the Assistive Touch feature:

That guide is a little dated (shows iOS 6), but the steps are the same as in iOS 7. This will at least give you home button functionality until you can get a replacement.

If you want to regain TouchID functionality, the only solution is to get a new logic board, and choose the paired board/home button option.

Well, I am sorry to tell you, but if you tore your Touch ID ribbon cable, then you can no longer use the touch ID function, and because you opened the phone, Apple is not allowed to take a look at it, even though they are the only ones that can do this type of repair. However, I have the same problem, and I did have an idea, that may or may not work, if you are dead serious about fixing your Touch ID. Before all of this, I suggest you just back up your iPhone to icloud and see if erase iPhone will fix the problem.

So, if you know someone or find someone near you online who has a iPhone 5s that broke the screen (or something like that); and doesn't want it anymore, then a good idea would be to buy it from them for very cheap. (I am not telling you to replace your iphone, but to just use it for this repair, but if you really feel like replacing it instead with this one, be my guest). Go ahead and replace the home button with a third party one (maybe off of amazon). Then, erase all the memory from your iphone after backing it up to icloud.

So, after you have backed your phone up to icloud and have erased all the iPhone's memory clean, (I am talking about everything, the entire OS and all), you can go ahead with the other iPhone, and select erase iPhone in the settings, and then set it up with your personal data (sign in to icloud, re - install apps, etc.), you can go ahead and back all THAT data up to a place where you can then re - download it. (See where I am going with this)?

Then, on your iPhone that has no memory on it, download all of the backed up data from the other iPhone onto yours, and that will hopefully trick the iPhone into recognizing the third party touch ID as the one that came with the iPhone from the factory. The reason it may not back up the Touch ID data from the other iPhone and recognize it as a different ribbon cable is because according to apple, all Touch ID data is stored and encrypted on the A7 system on a chip, and should never be backed up. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcKLwBtl...)

If you are not willing to take these risks, then I am fine with that. But if you do this, and it does not work, there very possibly could be the potential to sue apple for false advertising. This is just my idea, and it may not work. You could also repair the other iPhone, and if your's has been restored, then you could select erase iPhone on the other one you had bought (again), and sell it. If it doesn't work, then you could still repair the phone, and replace your old one. But there is that. I hope this helps. Have a nice day!

*please know that this should only work with IOS 9.3. I take no responsibility for any damage caused to any iPhone.

Can't someone who has a microscope and is skilled with micro-soldering just splice the ribbon cable back together...? Why would that not work? It doesn't look like there are that many traces in that ribbon cable at all; I doubt it would be that difficult.

So you don't have the skills to do it, but you are sure that someone with the skills to do it would be able to?

OK

"doubt it would be that difficult." Do you even know how small the traces are? You can now get it replaced at the apple store and not lose "Touch ID ". A better and smarter solution than "splicing the ribbon cable back "

Hi Josh and Simon, Touch ID cable CAN be spliced back together. There are people offering this service in China, since ripped Touch ID cable can brick the phone in the past and made it worthwhile to spend hours microsoldering the cable.
