Completely dead MacBook Pro, won't turn on.

I was using this MacBook Pro. I bought it over a year ago (so no warranty anymore) at an Apple store here in South America. (EMC 2554, late 2012)

Block Image

I turned it off, everything seemed normal, but the next morning it wouldn't turn on again. It won't even start up: absolutely no sound, as if it was completely dead.

I checked the battery indicator and it was completely charged. I opened it up and disconnected the battery, plugged in the MagSafe charger, and there was still no response. I plugged the battery back in and no response. Plugged in the charger and connected the battery and no response.

I took out the hard drive and all my info was there; it would mount on a different MacBook Pro with no problem, and luckily I got all my files backed up.

So I know the hard drive is not the problem. The fan won't even move when trying to turn it on.

I tried taking out the RAM, one by one, no RAM at all, switching them from slot to slot: no response.

Tried out all of the key combinations on the keyboard as well... still nothing.

I don't know what else to try. I read somewhere that the on/off button is connected to the ribbon cable from the keyboard. I checked, and it is plugged in correctly to the logic board. I'm afraid my logic board is dead, but after only a little more than a year????

Any guesses?

Thanks for your help.

Maybe it's the battery or something. I dont know.

I'm writing this note on my Macbook Pro 2013 that just died and stayed dead. Wouldn't show a charger light green or orange when plugged in. Not showing life at all for a week. I tried switching the battery from my older Macbook Pro and Voila, here we are.

Insidentally, for 'the proof of the pudding' on the 'mind-numming' comment made here – my Macbook Pro 2013 won't start or show any signs of life even when plugged in when it's battery was dead but my older Macbook works fine with that dead battery when plugged in? Seán Kell....

FIXED FOR REAL!! Mac Book Pro 15" Laptop. This is a fairly old thread but an ongoing problem. I tried everything I could find and finally gave up on all the button combinations as they did nothing. FIXED!! Yes mine is fixed and what I did was remove the bottom of the case, disconect the battery, remove the memory sticks (i had two). Wait ten minutes give or take and then replace the memory and reconnect the battery. Push the power button and mine fire right up. No loss of info, no crazy glitches, nothing. Worked fine all week. Downside. I powered it down by choosing "shutdown" from the apple drop down and sure enough it would not power back up. So......... did the above all over and sure enough it powered right back up. Note: I did have to have it connected to the power cord even though when it turned on it displayed 85% battery. Now the next step will be to try to get someone willing to take a look at a late 2011 machine. No guarantee on your machine but worked flawlessly on mine.

Solução escolhida

There are 12 versions of this model - yours is a 2012? Newer models will not boot if there is no battery present, and that battery must have about a 15% charge.

Try a different battery before you blow up your board fooling with it.

Start with the easy, basic stuff; work toward the harder, more expensive solutions.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

I swapped batteries with a similar macbook pro that had the same battery model. It turned on but no apple appeared. I was glad for a moment but I turned it off and tried to turn it back on and no response. I switched the batteries back (the original battery had full charge) and forward, plugged in the charger too, but it won't turn on again.

por

Take the battery out and let the computer it sit overnight to discharge capacitors (not plugged in either). Next day put the charged battery in and connect the laptop to a wall outlet. Attempt to boot... wait 20-30 minutes before turning off. If it tosses any errors note them. Try a Safe Boot (shift boot). In the mean time put the "problem" battery in the battery donor machine and attempt to start if boot use System Information to check that batteries status.

por

I tried what you instructed but it did not turn on, no response =( The only light that turns on is the magsafe connector and the battery status.

The problem battery seems to be fine.

por

Sound like a logic board problem - can you get to a Apple Certified shop for an estimate of what's wrong... Is there any other history you left out- power surge, liquid spill? It's extremely rare that these just suddenly stop working.

por

No other damage, but just this moment i tried powering it up again. First a small light to the side of the light that turn on when it powers up came on, i got the chime and now its stuck on the apple logo, loading... I'll keep posting any news.

The misinformation here is mind numbing.

a) It is the opposite - newer models will turn on with no battery, and when you plug them in they will turn on by themselves. Only certain older models required the battery to be charged to turn on.

b) No you do not BANG it to make it turn on, this is BS.

c) Measure PP5V_S5 and PP5V_S3 voltage rails.

Whether I approve of the answer has nothing to do with it! It doesn't change fact.

Any sandy bridge, ivy bridge, or haswell based Apple notebook will turn on without a charged battery. Not only will they turn on without a charged battery; they turn on by themselves the moment the magsafe is plugged in if it is not closed(besides 820-2850, which this is not)! To state that they will not turn on without charge is factually incorrect information. If factually incorrect information stays up without correction, it will hamper someone else's ability to repair this problem, because they will not understand how the system works.

My aim is to spread proper and correct information that will lead to working devices and sustainable repairs. This includes correcting false information and this includes telling you that banging a machine on the table to make it work is BS, and I am NOT shy about this! If these are the repair tactics we teach buy subdomain idropitoutawindowandsayifixit.com.

por

Louis - Apple Disagrees with you. According to them it is entirely possible to have a machine that will not turn on when you plug it in.

por

No they don't. I specified sandy bridge, ivy bridge, and haswell based machines ONLY(excluding 820-2850); which includes the original poster's machine. That article you linked to references all Macbook Pros. Please read before commenting! +

por

It's moot point not mute point unless, of course, you where referring to the point actually falling on deaf ears which, in that case, you are correct but, passed on the inference you original statement is incorrect.

I have the same problem, a macbook pro that will not boot up or start depending on how pedantic you are and, I have not found any source that has provided a solution. Sorry for wasting anyone's time but, I could not resist further expounding upon an argument over something so trivial.

por

As dumb as it sounds - bumping the four corners on a solid surface(without doing damage) worked in my case and appears to have worked for others. So saying it is BS is narrow minded. Maybe we need to know what the bumping is doing to restore power. It's easy to try and harmless to try- if you are not an idiot with it and bang it too hard. Take path of least resistance first.

After you notice that ur b3 life is gone then switch it on again and hopefully dt might work.

Incredible but true: I did exacltly the same thing after trying all kind of keyboard combinations (wchich didn't work) on a 4 year old Macbook Pro Retina 15":

Shut off the laptop. Bang it wil all the 4 sides against a table (I was desperate) and yes: it magically came back to life. Thank you very much !!!!!

Workrd for me too! Had a brick. Charger cable verified working - no sounds/lights /nothing. Did the Four Corners , a couple times around. The lights on the keyboard were on but no screen. Well, I know it is bizarre but my relatively new (late 2015) MacBook pro failed on me twice during last month. In both cases, I became desperate enough to

A) buy a set of screwdrivers to open it up

B) send it to an authorised apple centre

But I did not perform above actions, instead, done the following that worked for me on both occasions. As said I had no option to try on and ALL other solutions didn't help me at all including resetting SMC. So what I did was, I put my hand on the keyboard with a gentle pressure and moved it from right to left, in a way that it pressed a number of keyboard's keys at the same time. AND IT worked !!! Whether there is a lose connection underneath OR the move triggered a specific combination of keys that has not been published, I do not know. But I do know it worked for me twice. So give it a try, it might help you too !

The method suggested by Amir worked! After two days of attempting to troubleshoot and failing, with only black screen, no start-up chime, no fan sound, and already after making genius bar appointment... I put my entire hand on all keys and moved it back and forth with many of the keys (indiscriminately depressed) while pressing button the ON button... The newer machines do not come with a system installation DVD. Your machine shipped with 10.7.3 installed.

To reinstall the system or run Disk Utilities, start up holding down the Command and R keys.

Here's how to do it: http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/

por

I'd say you may have to ship it to Apple South Africa, or, contact them/look for a nearby Apple Certified repair center. Generally with todays electronics they either work, or they don't (like light bulbs) an intermittent problem I would put down to either a failing cable, cracked battery or loose component from a drop. Picking up the laptop by on side or corner flexes the case to either short, or un-short, the problem. I had a cracked battery that caused non-charging, starting issues, it was intermittent. It was the devil to run down. You could not see the crack until the battery was lifted out of the machine - but then it was evident. I was lucky it didn't start a fire! Some idiot stuffed his briefcase on top of my laptop bag while it was in an overhead bin in an Aircraft. I didn't realize he'd damaged the machine for a couple of days.

por

Angela - did you find a fix for this? I have the same problem but i haven't been able to turn it on...

What's the keyboard rub thing???? I have a 2013 MacBook Pro that's I've tried everything and out will not power on. I took it in to a Mac certified tech and was told it was the EMC chip (logic board needed to be replaced) was bad.

por

However ... my success was only short-lived. The machine worked for a few days, then died again and the "rub" couldn't revive it. :(

por

Believe it or not mine worked but with a twist I have mixed it up with the bang on four corners and the swiping on keyboard whiling pressing few buttons with little pressure and after 10 to 20 mins later this thing booted up lol

Hi, today my MacBook Pro (mid 2012) don´t startup, no lights in the charger, etc, It was completely dead. So I read some of the comments here and I decided to open it... Here is what I did:

1) I removed the battery

2) without the battery I connected the charger and immediately saw light and ripped

- - I turned off the computer and after cleaning the dust a bit

3) I put the battery back

4) I connected again, yes there was light but it did not start

5) I kept the start button depressed for 10 seconds, I released and pressed again

- - the machine returned to normal.

Hope this helps to some others.

I had a similar issue with a MacBook Pro 13 A1278. Would not power on. Pressing Shift, Control, Option and power button did nothing. Disconnecting the battery and then connecting the power lead would instantly turn the laptop on without pressing the power button. I could then re-connect the battery and disconnect the power lead and it would contine to work. But if I shutdown the macbook it would not restart without disconnecting the battery and repeating the same process. I eventually tracked it down to a faulty keyboard. It’s worth noting that the power button is part of the keyboard! After replacing the keyboard which required dissmantling the macbook (not as bad as it sounds if your handy with a screwdriver) and then removing a further 51 screws required just to replace the keyboard. There a plenty of good quality videos on YouTube showing how to.

Now everything is working perfectly :)

Angela I think your problem is not the battery (which you've already replaced it with a similar one) but your HDD.

If you have practice disassembling the hardware of your HDD and turn on the computer with a USB where there is an Apple OS (on the internet you will find many articles to create one). At this point if the computer is turned on you will understand that the logic board and battery (perhaps very used) are good and you'll only have to reinstall the OS on a new hard drive! ;-)

I recently replaced the glass and it did not boot up afterwards, no lights, nothing. Noticed the antenna and bluetooth cables exposed, i.e. black cable covering not there, where the cables come out of the display. I don't know how this happened but a piece of black electrical tape around the silver exposed parts did it for me.

Having exactly the same issue with my MacBook Pro 13" (early 2015) that I bought new in November 2015. Took it to Apple, they say they can't replicate the problem therefore there is nothing wrong with it (which I'm pretty annoyed about) - I've discovered that if it does decide to switch off and become completely unresponsive, all I have to do is to physically turn it upside down, then back the right way up, and hey presto, it starts up every time.

...not sure I want to be stuck with a £2k mac that I have to keep fricking turning upside down though!

SOLVED! I want to share how I fix it. My MacBook Pro had same problem. Last night I turned off my comp, but next day cannot turn on. I searched internet-nothing work. Sound like on/off button doesn't do connection to comp. I removed bottom cover (unscrewed first) and located spot under button on/of. There tree connectors together and one little bit on side (they are very small). I disconnected and connected back one by one - that all what I did. And my comp work again. Do not touch by fingers and do not use any metal to those connectors, because can be electric shortage. I used tooth pick to lift connectors and plastic side of small knife to press back those connectors. Do not disconnect all at ones- you can forget where they belong to- do it one by one.

Same time you can clean there dust around - just blow air. Before long time ago I did fix another comp for other problem-some connection wires was fallen off right under key board, some was just sit on top of their nest and wasn't pressed down.......

Hi All

I've been having trouble with macbook pro 2013, so I swapped the battery and it still refused to power up. I tested the voltage on the battery and charger which were both good. Then today I tried powering up again and with the macbook upside down and the lid open by about 50mm I pushed the power button and it has sprung into life! Intermittently as when I opened it fully it went off again.

I'm suspecting a bad connection somewhere, has anyone else had this fault? I will do some in depth searching later on.

My daughter was using a MacBook Pro 13 mid 2012 unibody for college. Recently did a clean install on a 1 TB SSD of High Sierra. Was working fine until she came home for weekend. She says she closed lid with it running when packing. When she got home I was going to a time machine backup and it wouldn’t start. Tried everything you can read in this forum. I left battery disconnected and charger off overnight. Next morning reconnected battery and it started right up. I didn’t log in but shut it down from menu. Immediately tried to turn it on again and nothing! I’m thinking MagSafe board? Only other thing is old charger only worked intermittently so I purchased a new one direct from Apple store. She used the new charger and worked fine. This was only 1 day before she closed lid while running and got the no start. Could the new charger have something to do with it? I’ve changed MagSafe board before so may try that for 10 bills. Any other ideas please tell me. I’m getting peeved with this machine! Thanks

The first MacBook Pro I bought my son stop working just before the second year.

After many visits to the Apple store to have it fixed, I was convinced by the Apple Tech in the Best Buy Store that the MacBook Air “13 “ had better design and less likely to have the same issues. I purchased the new MacBook Air in March of 2018 because my son needed it for his graphics design classes. Just past a year the computer will not turn on despite several efforts with the Apple Online Rep and us following all the suggestions online.

In the meantime my 10 year old Sony computer still works and my $250 Lenovo computer still works perfectly after two years.

Why are we allowing Apple to sell us these computers that cost over $1100 yet hardly work after a year? Apple now tells me I must pay $500 to fix MacBook Air. This is just bad business!
