Can I get a separate inverter for my MacBook Pro display?

My display backlight has failed. Screen seems otherwise Ok since I can see dialogue boxes (just) and enter passwords when I boot up. My local Mac repairer tells me that the problem is almost certainly a failed inverter. Although Apple sells the screen as a single unit, he tells me it is still possible to replace the inverter separately if I can get hold of one. Will one of the inverters available separately for other MacBooks run my display and can I get one from iFixit?

That's very helpful Mayer. I'll try ifixit, but even at the high price from weloveMacs.com, the good news is that I can get hold of one. Thanks also for the reference to the installation instructions, but I don't think I'll try this one at home! Thanks for your help.

This is not a repair for the faint of heart or much of one for a first time repair. The price might go down for a professional since you know what you want and where to get it. Pros respect that.

I've opened a lot of different mechanical and electrical machines in my time, but have not touched a lap top so far. I'll certainly not start practicing laptop repair on my MacBook Pro. Fortunately there is an accredited professional in my area who will do it for me if and when I source the part.

My wife has located what seems like the correct inverter from a UK company through e-bay at the following erl:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...

It's listed as being compatible with all non-unibody 17" models, nonetheless, I've sent an enquiry to confirm that it is compatible with my particular model. The photo looks physically correct. If this checks out, then I'm in business.

Thanks again.

I think my display is one of the last of the LCD displays before Apple started using 17" LED displays in early 2008. Are you able to confirm that for me Mayer?

We really need to know exactly which Book you have. Please remove the battery and get this information from inside the compartment. This is probably the part you will need: MacBook Pro 15" (Models A1150/A1211) Display Inverter

Here's how to install it: MacBook Pro 15" Core Duo Model A1150 Display Inverter Replacement

Many thanks Mayer. I was absolutely certain I had included details of the model for obvious reasons- either in the text (it could have been edited out) or in an info box that I recall appeared when I wrote the question. Either way, its a 17" MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz Santa Clara model A1229.

Thanks.

you are correct, you did enter the information needed, unfortunately your information was edited by another user who shall remain nameless.

The part number for the inverter board you need is 1004472. I found one at the following link : http://www.weloveMacs.com/mbp17inverter....

but it seems a bit pricey to me.

I would contact iFixit at the following link to see if they might have one: http://www.ifixit.com/Info/contact

I did not find one on eBay.

This part is hard to find, sorry.
