iPhone 5 touch screen unresponsive.

Thanks for reading, I’ll first explain the bizarre issue I’m having, then I’ll go through what I have attempted and those results (spoiler: nothing worked).

I have an iPhone 5, the back glass was cracked so I ordered a replacement piece and then took it all apart and replaced the broken glass panel on the back (you need to take out a lot of pieces in order to get to this location on the 5). I’ve taken apart numerous iPhones and work very carefully with them (apparently not careful enough this time).

After replacing the glass with no issues I reassembled the phone and attempted to power it back on.

My home button and my lock button were both unresponsive

I plugged in the charge cord to get it to boot and once the phone was at the lock screen I entered my password and could navigate the phone just fine (without the lock and home buttons working). I took the phone apart and slowly rebuilt it making sure everything is where it should be and then tried to turn it on again.

My home button and lock button still didn’t work, and after booting it with a charger cable now my touch screen no longer responded to any touch gestures. After messing with the screen and pressing different locations it occasionally would somehow activate the home key and/or invert the colors (triple tap home).

Here is what I have tried:

Reconnect everything and make sure there is no dust and that everything is set in correctly

No Change

Replace screen with a working screen from another iPhone 5

No Change: This means my digitizer and LCD are fine (they worked on another iPhone5)

I’m completely lost as to what could have happened. My phones screen worked initially after my repair, the OS boots correctly and I can see (behind the lock screen) all my wifi bars and network connections which means the mother board, for the most part, is in working order.

I have checked the connections again and again and they seem fine (I can take pictures too but they look like any other iPhone5).

My last resort was posting to forums, let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks for taking the time to read and help.

Here is a guess and a suggestion. Never let the Apple Store or someone on telephone Apple Support tell you your phone can't be fixed.

I have an iPhone 5. Recharging at night. One morning it was stuck in some wonky condition. The Apple Store claimed it couldn't be fixed. The only thing to do is replace it for $285.

Dealing with Apple, If all else fails it may be software. I connected the phone to my MacBook, called Apple Support, and then opened my MBP "Console" app. Just to LOOK.

One message was a URL instruction sent to an Apple domain. The error message plainly said "Trying to authenticate iPhone with Apple," followed by "Can't authenticate." Then "-402 Apache Error."

I told the Apple support tech about the messages. They are trained to reply: "we are not trained on those messages." answer: "neither am I but they seem clear. It is a software problem. How about a replacement phone?"

Fedex just delivered my iPhone for free.

hello. I have the same problem and didn´t find a solution so far. Did you find a solution?

I have the same problem. The screen is unresponsive at times, then i lock it, then it becomes responsive again for a few minutes, then turns unresponsive again.

por

Try turning down screen brightness.

My wife had this problem on her iPhone 5c. It started pretty much from the day she got the phone and progressively got worse with each ios update until finally after unlocking the phone it would only accept 4 screen commands and then become totally unresponsive.

At this point she let me have a look at it. After a few minutes of setting changes, soft resets etc and just before a hard reset I decided by chance to change the screen brightness. Phone is now fully functional! Crazy but give it a go you never know :P

Edit: after 1 day it started playing up again. Ensure auto brightness is off to avoid it going back to full power.

This actually worked for me! Thank you so much for the suggestion! Of all the crazy things to be wrong, I would never have guessed this.

por

mine has been doing this too with increasing frequency. My brightness is already almost at the bottom (maybe 1/10 or less from minimum). Has anyone else found anything to work?

Hold down the power button for a few seconds and then the home button (at the same time). This should power your phone off and cause it to reboot on its own.

Hi there how did you take out the battery? Did you pry it off against the motherboard?

Because home and power buttons not work at same time points to componants that are damaged on motherboard right under the plastic battery pull tab ..

You could have damaged the flex on both your home button and your power button check the with a multimeter. For the digitizer you should check for damaged or missing components around the digitizer connector on the logic board.

Hi thanks for the reply! You're probably right regarding the home and lock screen buttons, changing out a flex is probably the answer with those. My real concern is the screen not responding to touch.

As I said, the components on the screen and digitizer itself work fine (tested with another iPhone 5) so the problem would have to be somewhere on the mother board (I think?) The phone boots up fine and appears functional so a fully shot mobo isn't a possibility. Every part I took out is back in. The only reasonable explanation to me could "maybe" be not having all the screws back in their exact locations, but that honestly doesn't seem like it could cause such an issue.

Any other ideas?

Actually the screw position matters a lot. Especially if you mix up screws that go in the PCB - meaning those two that go in near the CPU, that hold the lid on the LCD connectors. If you put a long screw in there (say, from battery conector), you can easily do permanent damage to PCB and kiss it goodbye, because the long screw can puncture/damage/drill through multiple layers of said PCB and there's nothing to be done anymore.

Sounds like battery pry damage, check for missing components and ICS near the sim connector.

I had the same issue as all of you. Unresponsive screen. It's in fact due to the screen itself. Replaced the Screen assembly and all works fine again...

  • Hit <enter> to insert another list item, and <enter> twice in a row to end the list. To get subitems, repeat the bullet character once for each level of indent you want (e.g. **)

Same problem with my iPhone 5s.

My IPhone 5 was working fine, then suddenly a purple colored pattern (like plaid) appeared over the screen and the screen was unresponsive. I've tried everything recommended for an unresponsive screen and nothing has worked. After doing a hard reboot it says I need to put in my passcode but the screen doesn't respond to touch so I can't do that. is the phone toast?
