I've lost control of my iPhone's home button

My iPhone's home button has recently been activating on its own at random. Siri, multitasking, apps exiting, more screenshots than I can count, all without actually pressing the home button. Raise to Speak is off. This happens regardless of if anything is plugged in to the headphone jack, phone orientation, or if the phone is even being touched.

I've already replaced the home button, which worked for about 3 or 4 days before acting up again. Apple Store suggested a screen replacement, but I'd rather just put that money toward a new device.

The battery has also been wonky and failed Apple's diagnostic test. Obviously this needs replacing, I only mention in case it could be related.

What say you, iFixit community? Am I doomed to a screen replacement? Or is there something else at play?

Verizon iPhone 5, 16GB, iOS 7.0.4

The home button is a separate unit on the screen, first try gently moving the metal prongs . The iPhone 5 assembly is fairly easy to replace once the screen has been disassembled.

You don't have experience try taking it someone who has experience with these so they can trouble shoot this.

Thanks. Just replaced the battery and that actually seems to have solved the existing problem, but the new battery won't charge and I'm stuck in something of a boot loop. Not a true boot loop, I'm getting a minute or two of use before the screen dissolves into the apple logo and a soft reboot. Oddly, the phone turns itself back on if I try to turn it off, too

Ok, battery swap problems fixed and I've checked/cleaned the two metal prongs and connectors, but the home button still has a mind of its own. I've noticed it gets worse the longer the phone is on. Also, I can activate the home button by pressing hard on the screen, or squeezing the sides of the phone.

I know, right? Especially since I'm an experienced Apple repair tech and not a first timer turning to the internet for help. Oh wait...

What's the status with your iPhone now?

Replaced the ribbon cable, worked great for about two weeks, starting to fire on its own again though not as bad as before. Really getting frustrated here, I'm just about ready to put this thing on ebay.
