Battery wont charge after new battery installed.

OK, my phone kept shutting off even with battery still left, sometimes 40% sometimes 20% sometimes as much as 70%, as soon as I plugged it in and it would start right back to where it was (as far as the battery %). After about a month of this I figured the battery was dying and I needed a new one so I came on here and used the guide and replaced the battery. Then when I started my phone and used the front facing camera the phone would freeze up so I ordered a new one of those. But I realized my battery never charged and it died on me, so I thought maybe I received a bad battery and ordered another, when I got it it had about 20% so I plugged it in and came back about half an hour later, and I lost about 2%, so I tried 3 different cables 2 different wall chargers I tried the laptop the pc even the car charger... nothing. I restored it, no change. So I ordered a new charging port put it in and still nothing. What could the problem be? I'm at about 7% battery and counting.

I believe I had some rain damage. I just replaced the battery, and the phone does boot and start up fine, but it does not register charging. I currently have the device open, but I don't think there is any moisture inside to 'dry out'.

Since I have power with the new battery, is there a diagnostic tool that can tell me what potentially is the problem? I don't feel like the answer of "keep swapping things out until it works" is the solution I want to pursue. Of course, I could consider upgrading when the new 7's come out next month.

@sibex9591 I don't think there is any magical diagnostic tool that will magically tell you what's wrong. From what you are describing it sounds like either the charging dock connector or ribbon cable plug is water damaged / corroded or the charging circuit has been damaged in some sort of way, charging IC as a worst case scenario.

I see the lightening connector assembly is a wee bit more difficult to replace, but at $20, maybe it is worth a go. I'll have to think about it.

I should have had the rain cover on the phone that day, since rain was in the forecast, and it did in fact rain. Since it was mounted on my bicycle handlebars, it was quite wet when we took a break an hour later. I dried the exterior of the phone, and then put the rain cover on, though the rain was done for the day. When the battery died, it did take a charge up to 20%, but then after that it wouldn't charge again. Was hoping a simple battery replacement would be enough.

Charging problem:

Replace battery

Replace dock connector

Try logic board in a known good housing

Troubleshoot logic board repair--battery connector, charging coil--there are solutions out there to determine which logic board components control the charging component---these occur after some sort of damage--if you haven't dropped or water damaged your phone then I'd look at the battery connector socket--in addition to supplying power and serving as ground, the middle pins serve as the battery gas gauge --it sounds like this may have been the problem initially. Also, you may have damaged the charging coil with a third party charger.

Thank you I will look into these suggestions, I have restored and updated (without restoring from a backup) it makes the sound like it's charging but still won't charge. I have not dropped it nor does it have water damage.

Hi, I have the same issue as max. My iphone 5 won't charge, even thought iTunes detects it and says it's charging. I've used various lightening cables, various power bricks and various USB ports. I've changed the battery with batteries purchased on ebay and an oem apple battery, I have 4 batteries total. I also changed the docking port. I recently jailbroken to run a variety of battery apps. One app in particular has the charging status as "inactive" when not plugged in, which didn't surprise me. But when I pluged it in the charging status switched to "badtemp". jessabethany, you mentioned there is documentation out there to troubleshoot the logic board. I've tried googling it, and haven't found anything concrete, also you mention the middle pins of the battery monitor the gas gauge. I am unfamiliar with that. Any more info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much

In the absence of drop or water damage, fake charging is most likely due to pry damage to a small black square ic near the battery connector on the battery side of the board.

You need to replace this ic on the motherboard to solve the problem, which isn't really a DIY job. Feel free to contact me via my profile if you can't find anyone local that can do board-level repairs.

If your iphone is still under any warranty, best go back to apple tech support. It might initially be a bad battery pack.

Does this happen when it is plugged into iTune on PC or Mac computer?

Update

Have you tried backup everything and do a factory reset on iphone? a clean reboot with empty data and maybe even before activation then try to charge with original apple charger and computer to see if works. If can show charging try to see if charged 100% before further use of iphone.

It seem to me some kind of software problem since u have changed to new one n still cannot charge. Assuming the batt pack is apple original...

No it's not under warranty, plus I've taken it apart several times. when it's connected to a pc itunes does detect it and I can sync and restore, it makes the sound like it's charging and the lighting bolt shows it's charging it just doesn't charge.

i replace the iphone 5 battery. what seems weird is that after I charged it to 100%, it doesn't seem to deplete at all. I mean it's depleting like super slow. as if the battery level is not moving or maybe not accurate. how do I know if i can calibrate the battery energy level?

I replace my battery in my iPhone 5 it was charging before I opened up the phone to replace my battery,I can not get it to show its taking a charge. I thought it might be the battery so I stuck the old one back in and it's still not taking a charge. I was careful when removing the battery, is there something I might have done to damage it so it won't charge with any device? Everything looks normal.
