iPhone 5 can't restore - Stuck at "Waiting for iPhone"

I have an iPhone 5 that's really giving me a headache.

At first it started up but the screen wouldn't come on = it synched with iTunes and vibrate on/off worked, but replacing the screen didn't work. There's no visible liquid damage but I suspect it might have been a victim of a static discharge working environment.

I've had the backlight coil replaced(the likely suspect) on the logic board but now it's stuck in DFU-mode and won't go any further than "Waiting for iPhone" in iTunes and an Apple logo on the screen with an empty progress bar below. Now I'm thinking the backlight coil might not have been faulty after all.

What are the likely suspects in this case? I'm tried to restore with several dock connectors/flex cables and USB cables but nothing seems to work.

Could it be the flash memory? Any good ideas for a fix that doesn't require completely replacing the flash chip?

( To do this, hold down the On/Off button until the iPod shuts off. Then hold down both the Home and On/Off button for 10 seconds. Let go of the On/Off button but keep holding the Home button for another 10 seconds. iTunes will tell you that you're in recovery mode and that you must restore your iPod )

Solved

Hi Guys, I had this problem with my iPhone 5s.

iTunes was "waiting for iPhone", Phone was working perfectly before I decided to update via iTunes and the problem was the phone would not restart after software extraction.

Anyway the problem seemed to be my USB 3 hub which I should point out works perfectly with all other apple products but for some reason iTunes didn't like it while updating or restoring my iPhone 5s.

So I plugged the cable directly into the PC' s USB 2 port and it worked fine!

Hope this helps someone...

As long as nothing is actually wrong with your iPhone, you can exit Device Firmware Update (DFU) mode without restoring the device in iTunes. To get out of DFU mode follow the same steps as a forced restart.

1. Hold down the Sleep button and Home button at the same time.

2. After a few seconds the Apple logo appears and the iPhone will boot.

3. Your iPhone is now out of DFU mode.

If the procedure doesn't work the first time, try steps 1-2 again. If something is wrong with your iPhone you may need to restore your iPhone 5 using iTunes.

How can I restore iPhone 5c without iTunes backup

Just making sure you are running iTunes 11.1....?

Try a DFU mode. Disclaimer: This is seriously at your own risk as its the most basic level a phone can boot into and thus opens it up to a much more severe bricking sequence. It's like recovery mode but plug into computer, hold the home key + power button for 10 seconds, release power button whilst still holding the home key for an additional 10 second then release. iTunes should say its detected a phone in recovery and the device's screen will still be black. You need to get the timing of 10 seconds as close as possible. If you achieve this then go through attempting a restore of iPhone stuck in recovery mode.

It's radical but it's a shot. Otherwise you can just call tech support line at 800-MY-Apple/visit retail store and work through it to a hopeful resolution. This is sadly, but honestly, the risk you take with buying a brand new device on it's first day or launch.

If you can‘t update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

You can put your iOS device in recovery mode and then restore it with iTunes.

In these situations, you might need to use recovery mode to restore your device:

iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.

You see the Apple logo on your screen for several minutes with no progress bar.

You see the Connect to iTunes screen.

Learn what to do if you see the progress bar on your screen for several minutes.

Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again

1. Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. If you don't have a computer, borrow one from a friend or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.

2. While your device is connected, force restart it: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, and don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen.

3. When you see the option to Restore or Update, choose Update. iTunes will try to reinstall iOS without erasing your data. Wait while iTunes downloads the software for your device.

If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits recovery mode, you'll need to repeat these steps and choose Restore instead of Update when you get back to this step.

4. After the Update or Restore completes, set up your device. If you previously backed up your device with iTunes or iCloud and had to restore your device in step 3, you might be able to restore from your backup during setup.

When it says, waiting for iphone, it fails. It won't pick up the iphone. The iphone is dead and won't turn on to Apple logo to put it recovery mode to get the option to restore or update. While it is off, I managed to put it in DFU mode then it says restore and update, I can't choose between, i have to click that, after I click restore and update, it attempts to restore and fails when it reaches waiting for iphone section

I faced to the same problem with my iPhone 6

This is the solution ,

First Install the latest version of itunes to your PC

After the installation restart yor PC

Then Turn off your device (Iphone Ipad etc..)

Open iTunes in your PC

Connect the USB cable to your device and connect to PC

Now turn on your device,

Next you have to put your device to recovery mode .. to put that press and hold Sleep/awake button and Home button together for 10 second then you will see that your device is restarting but don't get your fingers out from the buttons.. after appearing apple logo you will see a message connect itunes,

Now open iTunes and after few seconds a message will appear that saying restore or update ,

Press restore and update ...

After downloading the file itunes will restore files to your device..

Now if the problems "Waiting for iPhone"

or these errors,

The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9).

The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (4005).

The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (4013).

The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (4014).

Try to change your USB cable to original or a better one , or

Try to restart your pc and follow above steps, or

Try to install with another PC...

This methods should work fine ...

Apple seems to have an issue in the update software. It is causing a lot of iphones to over heat. The issue is not phone specific it is happening with all iphones from 5 to 6 and 6 plus I have heard of so far.
