Replaced DC In Board, charging still difficult.

For a while my magsafe cords would only light-up if I connected them in just the right way i.e., straight on, no fiddling. Computer often indicated battery was not charging unless cord was connected just right. Replaced battery (original was almost 6 years old), didn't help. Replaced DC In Board, hasn't helped. Now my battery won't charge at all. Maybe it's the cord. I have two. One works better than the other. But, I'm connected to it right now, and the battery isn't charging. It will probably start again soon, but I'm afraid the day will come when it won't charge at all ever again.

Yes by all means check the ends of the magsafe (when it's unplugged) there are springs on the pins and a 6 yr old connector could be rusted, clogged with grit or shorting from flex. A shot of WD-40 and working, picking, any gunk out from around the edges, lightly depressing the pin with a toothpic to see if it springs back could help. Same for the second cord, depending on it's age. If the pins are not all the same height, or if they don't have a bit of spring to them... there's your problem.

Although a smart design it does have several point source failure problems... that's why it was redesigned a few years ago.

A slight correction here the pins are just slightly stepped from the outer ones to the middle smaller pin. This is done so case ground is mated first, then the next inner power and last the signal line being the lowest pin (small middle pin). The matting connection plate surfaces are flush. I too often need to clean the connections on both the cord and the system to resolve odd connection and charging behavior.

Thanks for your feedback.

Yes, I thought the pins in the connector(s) might be the problem. They don't look dirty, but I'll give cleaning a try. I have some very fine electric motor oil, maybe I'll try using that instead of WD40 haha. I don't really want to buy a new adapter. So expensive. I thought the connector on the DC in board might have been the problem, because it was very dirty and I wasn't able to get it very clean.

Best to use some good isopropyl alcohol to clean with a cotton swab and use WD40 on a swab to lube the cord pins. You want to be careful as some oils will degrade plastic.

It is very unlikely that an AC adapter that shows a green light and successfully powers your laptop could also be responsible for NOT charging your battery. That said, you should make sure it's a known-good AC adapter by trying it on a friend's computer and verifying that it does go amber and charge a battery. Or buy a 3rd party one on eBay for $18, but you'd still need to verify the new one works on another computer. You should also verify you have a known-good battery by verifying your batteries charge on another computer. If you don't have known-good parts, you really don't know anything, and you're just a cat chasing its tail.

Once you have a known-good AC and are still having the same problem, it's most likely the battery connector inside the laptop. These have many pins that go deep into the logic board, and they sometimes come a little loose. Take a look at the iFixit guide, remove the battery connector from the board, clean the logic board end and the battery connector end with 91% alcohol, plug it back into the board (give it a good push and make sure it's very securely connected), and see if that makes a difference. If not, buy a replacement battery connector. Because you have a 2006, you'll need the non-Energy Star version, which does not have a gap in the pins.

Make sure to reset the SMC Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) Often the SMC gets confused on the batteries health.
