What brand of hard drive in EMC2309?

Is there a way to determine what Brand of HD in my iMac (EMC2309)? It currently will not boot, and will not flip into safe/recover/or USB boot mode.

I am suspecting the Hard Drive because of clicking sound it makes when attempting to boot. Warning on iFixit is to replace with the same Brand, however, I would prefer not to dissassemble and leave dissassembled while I wait for a replacement drive.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You could have either a Seagate or Western Digital HD.

If you can boot up under an external HD or the grey recovery disk the system came with you might be able to tell by going to the Apple menu and selecting About This Mac Then clicking on More Info... under Lion or System Report... Under Mountain Lion. There you can look at the HD info under the Serial-ATA section. If your drive is to far gone it may not show up. If it does try using Disk Utility to test & repair the drive.

Otherwise you'll need to open the system to see what you have.

Review this IFIXIT Guide Hard Drive Replacement Guide

But, before you go down that path. Apple did have an extended warranty program for the Seagate HD's. Plug in your S/N into this Apple Support Web site

Dan, Thanks for the response. I had already put in my serial number on the Seagate HD recall programme, but it said the computer was not eligible. But I read a few other posts indicating that it was doing that for all serial numbers since August 12 when the program expired.

If it is still working, then it would probably be safe to assume a Western Digital drive.

Unfortunately can't seem to get mac to boot with any of the following:

While booting, hold the:

-shift for safe boot

- C for access to the recovery on a USB drive, or the original CD

- R for access to the recovery partition (makes sense if the drive is toast)

Any other suggestions to get it to boot would be appreciated.

You should be able to get an external HD (or flash drive) which has a working system to boot. The recovery CD/DVD you got with the system also should have booted your system. Check out this TN Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs. Maybe the way your booting your system is the issue. If you still can't boot the system up on a different drive, you likely have other problems.

Dan, it finally did work from the cd. I was just too impatient as it takes quite a while. Determined that I have a Seagate HD, and even though the iMac is within the recall period, Apple confirmed that it was not covered by the program. I guess I'm just unlucky that it failed at 27 months :-(

Ordered a new drive from iFixit.
