Can I swap my 2009 iMac mobo for a later model?

Hi everyone!

I have an EMC 2309 late 2009 27 inch iMac with a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo CPU. Fairly average model, not really fast enough for video editing anymore. Upgrading probably means buying a new Mac.

Unless..

I can take out the logic board, bung a newer one in with an i7 processor. What do you reckon, any chance?

Wrong fittings / PSU etc?

Problem solved, in a different way - I just replaced my 4670 video card with a 6970M, as per the ifixit guide.

Sort of - you can change within model years (a very advanced DIY project) but jumping across model years creates many problems.

So you could move to the iMac "Core i7" 3.33 27-Inch (Late 2009) if you could locate a board but jumping one model year for a slight gain to a 3.6 hardly noticeable when video editing.

IMHO You are looking at spending a lot of time. money and effort to swap boards... with... the possibility of damaging the machine if you've never undertaken such a major task before, for very little actual gain in performance.

My advice woudl be to sell the unit and upgrade to a more professional model Mac Pro machine.

Referring to Geekbench, there will be an increase of about 500 points after upgrade from C2D 3.06 to 3.33 - you won't notice that.

I had a similar upgrade in mind concerning MacBook Pro 17" and have to say that it is not worth the work and time you will have to spent.

If you are with video editing a SSD would speed up your iMac a lot or even changing to a model with an increased RAM bus speed.

The SSD would speed boot time - but writing to an SSD isn't really faster, that's how/why the fusion drive evolved.

I don't really care about boot time - disk access speed isn't my problem. It's whether or not I can playback or scrub through a sequence on the timeline smoothly or not. CPU is in the firing line.
