"There is a problem with your iPhone" after battery replacement

My friend gave me his iPhone 3GS because he upgraded to a new iPhone. After a while, the battery started to swell, pushing the screen and logic board out from the phone. I replaced the battery with no problems, but now when I boot the phone up, the following happens:

I get the "Choose your language" screen.

I get the "Choose your region" screen.

I get the "Connect to iTunes" screen.

After I connect the phone to iTunes, it says "There is a problem with your iPhone" and tells me to visit the Apple Service Answer Center.

I put the iPhone into DFU mode, and have restored it 10+ times, but nothing changes.

After the phone sits around for a few minutes stuck at the "Connected to iTunes" screen, it reboots.

I took it into the Apple Store, and they tried to restore it and failed. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

did you make sure that you have a 3GS battery? Did you check the logic board for any damage from the swelling?

Yes, the APNs on both batteries are the same. The logic board is bent in the middle due to the swelling, but before I changed the battery, I charged it, updated the iOS, and put a few apps on it. So it DID work, and now it doesn't, which makes me think I did something wrong. But...well I can't SEE anything obviously broken or damaged.

When I was unscrewing the logic board, it suddenly popped from the battery pressure, and one screw broke off with the part of the board it screws into still on the screw. Could THAT be the problem?
