Can't decide if the battery is dead or the HDD?

Hello,

I just found my old 3rd gen iPod and wanted to use it again.

I have the dreadful apple logo and folder with exclamation mark flashing after pluging it in the firewire charger.

I tried the diagnostic mode, and it doesn't seem to pass the HDD scan, I launched it and it stayed all lit up with just HDD scan on the screen for a while and started heating up. It's been 30 min and the test isn't over yet... but I remember when I stopped using my ipod 4 years ago I had issues with the battery.

Prior to the hdd scan I ran the A 2 D test for the battery but never got this type of reply which I found online when looking for the diagnostic mode. my ipod was charging during the test.

"Tests the iPod's power. Your results should look something like this: "3.7V 0X000000E2 CHG OK FW 1 BAT 1". The results will be different depending if your iPod is plugged into your computer, a wall outlet or is just running off battery power."

I have this on my screen

ADC test

ID 004A

BAT 00158

ACC 003FF

ACC2 000FF

Do you have any ideas what the issue could be?

I'd like it to work again but I am ready to replace one component so do you think the issue is battery related or the hdd?

Thank you very much for your help!

sergenteliver, just from the age of the iPod my recommendation would be to replace the battery for sure. Regardless of any error etc. It is absolutely past its life expectancy. the error itself points toward a bad hard drive. You could get an adapter so that you can test the hard drive as an external drive on your computer. It is possible that the drive has "gummed" up and is frozen. I use one of these adapters to test my drives. Hope this helps, good luck.

great thank you for your quick reply

I will start with the battery and take it from there.

the fact that it is old and the battery is probably dead, does that explain why it doesn't show in iTunes?

Not the age, but the battery and the HDD could be a cause for that. Also, do remember that this iPod model works really well with Firewire connections and that you need to have a Firewire charger to restore:-). It is a great model, and I prefer my 3rd gen over any iPod touch.

I have a firewire charger! when apple still gave those when you bought an ipod ;)

so I can charge it, but to sync I only have usb on my macbook so I wasn't sur if that may be the issue. and yes it's a great gen that's why I would like to fix it

thanks again for your help

For the sync your USB port will work :-) no issues with that at all.
