Won't boot, power cord is glowing amber, what to do?

I replaced the hard drive and memory (1 gig) in this PowerBook last year with Apple OEM stuff. My granddaughter (don't laugh) was using it and it shut itself off one day and wouldn't reboot. I now have it back here and she was right, the *&%@ thing won't boot. I tried a different power cord, nope. I had to fiddle with the power cord to get it to glow at all. I took the battery out to see if it would boot without it, nope.

The battery is non-OEM but it is only about 1 year old and I got it from Otherworld Computing and their stuff is usually good. I can't zap the PRAM if it won't start up. some people have suggested that if I replace the PRAM battery, that might do it. This PowerBook is too young to die, but I don't want to spend major bucks replacing the motherboard.

Any ideas?

I agree with Lemerise, but you might also want to verify that you don't have a bad memory slot, by removing one of the two memory modules (assuming there are two), powering on, and if it doesn't work then put the module in the other slot with the first slot empty, and powering on again. It does sound like a power issue, but bad slots are common, so it might make sense to rule that out at least.

Also, make sure your power cord is 65W, because 15" Aluminum's won't boot when connected to 45W AC adapters.

I will verify the memory. I had a bad dimm last year and replaced it with OEM memory. There are indeed two and one is original memory. It's entirely possible that one has gone bad. This is a test I can do here. I have two adaptors, one is the original OEM and the other is from Other World. I'll let you know how things turn out. Thanks so much for your help.

I guess you have a power issue and your battery is probably good but discharged. Do you have friend where you could charge the battery with another PB and then try to power your PB ? The color glowing ac adapter tip could indicate a bad DC in board or a loose connection to the logic board. You can also test the pram battery charge with multimeter.

I don't know anyone with this kind of PowerBook, but the bad DC or loose connection sounds plausible. I have an old spent OEM battery rattling around here somewhere, but it probably won't charge. Not owning a multimeter, I'll have to take it to MacMall and have them test it. Thanks for your answer, maybe I can get the old girl up and running again. As long as it isn't the logic board, I should be okay.
