Optical drive connection and second drive configuration

Dear all,

Kind of a fancy question: while planning to set up a dual hard drive configuration (ssd+hdd), I'm wondering which kind connection is there between the optical hard drive and the mother board itself. Is it a full speed sata?

In other words: is it ok to put the faster ssd component in the optical drive bay or should I better put it in place of the old hdd?

Thanks!

Solução escolhida

Both ports are capable of 6 gigabit SATA3 speeds.

Go to: Apple menu / About this Mac / more info / system report / serial-ATA.

Each SATA port will be listed.

"Link Speed" shows capability of 6 gigabit speed.

"Negotiated Link Speed" indicates the speed of your connection to your drive.

This suggests that you can install your SSD in either location.

1 comentário:

If you don't see your optical drive under Serial-ATA (SATA) check under ATA (PATA) if it's listed under ATA then you have a slower connection. IFIXIT offers a PATA to SATA HD carrier so you can add in a 2nd HD or SSD drive (granted it will be slower than SATA). Under SATA, don't forget to take note of the Link Speed as you want to match your new HD or SSD to the same speed which will be reported at Negotiated Link Speed

The optical BUS is slower. Hook up the SSD to the normal hard drive BUS,
