dusting off an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo

Hi,

I have an iMac 20" (A1207 I believe?!) 1996, 2.33 GHz. mounting clips w/iMovie, the fans are very noisy, the temperature goes up to around 160º F. I think the fans are full of dust. How sould I proceed?

Thanks for counsel.

Philippe

Thank you both of you, I'll get it open and perhaps will take the opportunity to replace the hard drive by a bigger one.Might put an answer to close the debate afterwards.

What I want you to do is open this computer up and clean the fans out of dust. These are older machines, so they probably have a lot of dust in them.

I have linked all the guides to the fans.

If you find these are clean, it needs new thermal paste. See this to remove the motherboard

They are noisy--how could they be dead? Ralph

I am including the teardown guide for your unit. This will allow you to open it up and check for dust, etc. 160f is way to hot and is probably the reason the fans are running so hard. I really don't think just dust would cause your problem. If possible determine exactly what is getting hot in there. Since you do movies and looking at the age of the computer I would particularly check the hard drive. Good luck Ralph

Hello again, finished, some ongoing jobs, defragmentation and backup of the starting up volume. I started the dismanteling job but as I come to step 9 and 10, things are a bit different. the 2 Torx screws seem to be T5 as I cannot use a T6 bit and for the next step I don't spot the inverter cable connector; is it the one next to the left side of the cooler? (see pictures attached)?

The inverter cable is step 10--it should be directly under the LCD connector. Ralph

Hi, No problem for the T6 Torx screwdriver; I had a size 7 bit given as a 6 one!

By step 13 although I carefully lifted the display, I found a bit of thread (9.5 cm) w/tiny connector and ref 631-0316 C. I looked around and couldn't focus any spare connector where it could have come from, unless it was the AirPort Extreme antenna as I haven't found one?!

Step 18 : the configuration is much different

Step 25 the Camera and Microphone cables are on the same socket and need to unscrew the plate of the camera card (if it is such) near the radiator.

Step 27 : two T6 Torx screws instead of T10

Step 29 to Step 31 : no need

Step 32 : the power supply bundle is situated near the right corner in the empty space shown where hand stands on step 35.

Step 33 two fine thread screws are on different places plus two T6 at the top of the water cooling system screwed to the back bezel.(see images)

Anyway, I did it, dusted and lubricated the fans and went the other way round to put every thing back in place.

My iMac runs fine.
