Freezing on SSD due to SATA cable?

Hi,

I installed a Crucial m4 SSD on my Mac Mini Late 2012.

I now have problems of freezings, lasting from 10 ou 30s, after a manual FusionDrive updating.

I read that it might come from the SATA cable, which might not fit the SSD characteristics.

I have two questions:

- Is it possible to switch the HD and SSD in the Mac Mini without changing the system (because of this FusionDrive?)?

- What SATA cable should I buy if I want to change it?

Thank you very much.

Update

OK. So I just switched SSD and HD places.

The Mac mini boot without any problem and I didn't touch the FusionDrive setup.

I'll give it a longer try of course, but after a first minute of use, the computer is much more faster indeed. Seems to have solved the issue, so I'll see after a while.

Thank you very much!

If you created a fusion drive setup the HD & SSD can't be separated without the system not working as some of your Apps/Docs will be on on the SSD partly Vs the HD.

While Apples Fusion Drive idea has merit, I don't think Apple thought about what happens when the SSD or the HD encounters problems, or working with other parties SSD's.

If you have a full backup you should be able to break the Fusion drive setup. But you'll need to reformat the HD and restore your backup to it to make sure all of the files are back on the HD.

As to the SSD & SATA cable:

- Try setting the SSD to ATA-II Vs ATA-III, While the new Mac mini is SATA-III compliant, it's possible the HD being so close could be creating some noise thats interfering with the SSD. Slowing it down should help. If it does try a new set of SATA cables.

- There is a known issue with some 3rd party SATA cables. Make sure you use Org Apple or a vendor that has verified the cable is fully shielded.

Thanks for the explanations.

I was meaning switching the SSD to the place of the HD, and HD to the place of the SSD (not sure if I was clear about that). Do you think this needs breaking the setup and installing the OS again? (Was this what you meant?)

About SSD & SATA cable:

- What do you mean by setting the SSD to ATA-II and slowing it down? How should I try that, I mean is it a software manipulation?

Anyway, I'm wondering how I didn't find this link - sorry and thank you. I should indeed switch SSD and HD. Probably it's also much safer to re-install everything and the restore my Time Machine back-up.

If you just reordered the drives around you should be OK. It's when you break the Fusion drive you run the risk of loosing something.
