Replaced my LCD, but the new screen is blank too!
I am not a computer expert so bare with me... My old screen on my iBook G4 12" (1.2GHz/256 30G Combo APX model no. A1054) went blank although you could still vaguely see a shadow of the browser etc... Thinking the screen had gone I got a new one and after replacing it the same thing is happening so it can't be the screen someone has sugested it is the motherboard whatever that is but please tell me this is not terminal as I cannot afford to replace it!! Is it possible to plug it into an external monitor at all so that I can use it as a desktop until I can find sufficient funds to buy a new one... and if so what type of connection adapter would I need as my mothers pc monitor has a bulky connection which doesn't fit any of my ports... Thank you in advance!!! Ruth

Hi there yes I the screen is black but the image is still there everything else is working fine... but both screens are not working in that they have the same black screen and the image is there but very dark. Yes unfortunately I dropped the iBook about a week before the screen went black. No othere problems at all from what I remeber... I ahve been given a monitor so will try that next although I will be away for next couple of weeks so won't be able to do much more until I get back... Thanks Ruth

Do you mean the iBook was connected to an external monitor and you get a dark desktop image on the external too ? If so, check the brightness on the external cause should have a perfect imageon the external. Please post the result here.

no unfortunately I haven't been able to hook it up to a monitor yet as the person who gave me their monitor didn't give me any cables!!! No what I meant was the two screens for the laptop are doing the same thing. I am going away now for a couple of weeks or so but may have email contact at my friends for a week before no contact. Where I am going there is an apple store so I may try to take it along to see if they can diagnose the problem and let you know what they suggest hopefully they can hook it up to a montior and let me know if that works... watch this space!!! Thanks appreciate some expert advice as I am certainly not an expert!!! Ruth

Hi just found the thread I was looking for and hoping you can still help... The laptop hooks up perfectly to external monitor and I have had two bits of advice now... one that it could be the back-light gone and two that it is the inverter cable..Is there anyway of finding out what the number for the inverter cable is without taking it apart as there is one going on ebay which would be a cheaper option than getting fixed at the apple store or anywhere else... the inverter cable is coming from the G4 12" laptop too but do they differ at all..also surely if it is the back-light it wouldn't have gone on both screens... any help would be gratefully received!!Ruth

Here's the cable you need:

It's a difficult job to replace the inverter cable on the iBook G4.
