MBP (A1260) Kills Batteries

My A1260, (S/N 8YK0) worked fine until the first battery finally gave up the ghost after 3 years. I bought a new one from Apple and it charged fine, but after a month of normal use that changed. The pull down menu for the battery said "Replace Now" and the computer would not last 10 seconds without the charger. I suspected there was something wrong with the computer so I bought two, new, OEM batteries from a third party: TechOrbit. I verified that it replaced the A1175 and was a Li-ion, 10.8V, 60Wh battery.

These two batteries had the same problem the first day. I believe there is something in the computer, a logic board or similar, which is responsible for recharging management but is failing somehow.

Am I on the right track? If so, what part is the likely culprit?

Try resestting the PRAM and SMC and see if that helps.

Also if before the "old battery" went south if you installed or updated any applications a change in background processes running could cause the sudden battery drain. Check Utilities > Activity Monitor > CPU tab, set the pop-up menu to Active Processes, click on the CPU column header to sort, and see if anything is using a high amount of CPU capacity, .

Resetting the PRAM and SMC was the only way I could start the computer without the battery. Before that it would simply sit there when I pressed the I/O button. That issue is resolved now.

I did as you said and looked at the Activity Monitor; nothing out of the ordinary - 90% idle. I would not call the problem a sudden battery drain so much as the computer seems to be damaging the battery. Perhaps it is overcharging.
